PostSubject: Surprise at the Shelter today   Surprise at the Shelter today EmptyWed Apr 17, 2013 1:43 am

So as many of you know i was going to the shelter today to puck up a poor little Shiba Inu that had been shaved and was walking the streets. When i got there they told me that the owner had called and would be coming to pick him up. I'm happy b/c his lazy owner cam e but a little sad i don't get him. So since i had the kids with me and they were expecting puppy love i decided to look at the pooches they had.

There was a husky mix but upon inquiry turns out she was going to her forever home in a couple hours. So we kept looking. Finally we found one that seemed like it would be a good fit and asked to see him, The office staff said he didn't do well with other dogs. Then they asked me what kind of dog i had and of course i proudly proclaim i have a Siberian Husky,

Well what do you know..... They just happened to have a red and white 4 month old Siberian Husky puppy who really needed a home and was just getting ready to be put out for adoption.

So......4 hours later..... I have the most adorable red and white husky baby boy ( already fixed and up to date on all his shots.)

He's currently crashed out in the laundry room and Dakota is sleeping with my daughter.

The kids named him Rusty since his coat color looks like rust lol. He has one Blue eye and i swear the other one looks green... is that even possible? His mask is almost identical to Dakota's just red not black haha. He holds his tail up 90 degrees from the floor to wag it but no curl as of yet. I don't remember when Dakota started to hold his tail in the c shape.

He's a little over 18 lbs and i can tell he is going to be huge. Which is good b/c Dakota is already 22 in tall at the shoulders and 40.7 lbs at 11 months.

So a potentially bad day Turned into an awesome one Very Happy I'll post pics in the am I don't want to risk waking sir bites-a-lot.

Aw that's awesome! Post pics! Very Happy

It's definitely possible to have a green eye, Scarlette my foster pup had one, it'll as he gets older turn more into an amber color though.

Is it possible for them to have green eyes as adults? I know of a red husky with green/blue bi eyes at 11 months old, it definitely looks green to me :3

More importantly, congratulations! That would be a dream come true for me, the first thing I'm doing when I get a house is adopting a red male husky Smile

How wonderful that you considered several shelter dogs! Thank you! And because of that, you found the Siberian pup.

Congrates on your puppy. Siberians can have blue, green, amber, or brown eyes as adults or a combination thereof.

It occurs to me that if i hadn't decided to "browse" yesterday i would have never found this little guy. Very Happy so I command you all to browse and browse often lol

I do want to note the reason this little guy was at the pound was b/c he had a seizure and the people who had him could not afford the vet bill. The emergency vet brought him to the spca for care and the previous owners could not cover the $1300 bill so they had to relinquish ownership. Really sad story imo. He's been off the temporary seizure meds for a month and has not had another seizure and all his blood work and panels came back normal. I'm hoping he just got into something like almonds or had a bad reaction to a flea powder. But if he has another seizure the vet at the spca says i ought to get an mri done to rule out a brain tumor or epilepsy.

If it;'s a tumor well i just get to enjoy him as long as he's here if it's epilepsi then daily meds but he should live a long life. I don't think he's been alive long enough for a tumor to have grown big enough to cause seizures and in any case he would have had another one by now. I'm not sure how often they get seizures if they have epilepsy, so it's just wait and see.. either way it's a treatable condition and seizure meds are not too pricey. I did some research while i was waiting on the final consults with the behaviorist and doctor. Apparently he is very mouthy... not surprised so was Dakota and he doesn't like being pulled around by his collar.... what dog does?!

I will say this much, he sure doesn't act like he's sick lol he's a little ball of fur and teeth and a major instigator. Dakota will finally give up on rolling him and messing with him and lay down and here comes Rusty to whack him in the face with his paw or chew on his ear roflmao.
I needed to separate them for a bit so i could get breakfast ready and they both whined and fussed to be together lol

They still need constant supervision for a while .

A number of seisure cases have also been traced to diet and even epileptic seizures can increase or decrease based on diet, so it could have simply been the quality of the food he was getting. Be sure and keep him on a high quality food diet.

Awww...he's cute! I hope it was just an environmental cause and he'll be fine now.

Popular breed puppies at shelters usually go really fast. They usually never even make it to petfinder or the shelter's sites. There was a litter of 6 GSD's at the shelter I frequent and all six had found homes in like 2 days by word of mouth from the employees and volunteers. They were never even put in the adoption section! lol.

I like this shelter they have good funding. The dogs aren't kept in cages they each get their own little room with solid plastic couch and kennel and blankets and toys. When you walk through the halls you look through huge windows to see each dog. some of the smaller ones who like other dogs or have friends are kept together in a room with their own kennels to hang in if they want. They have a huge play yard with fake grass to play in and while i was there i saw at least 10 different volunteers walking dogs and playing with them. I was very impressed. They have the same type of thing for the cats. Little living rooms with bookshelves and chairs and cat towers for the kitties. They put 2 to 3 cats in each room. Every Thursday they have "get your fur fix" where people can come into a large living room set up and play with the less timid cats. There is no pressure to adopt it's more to socialize the kitties. They also have birds and small animals like bunnies and chinchillas and of course hamsters and such. It's a really nice shelter. I wish all shelters had the same set up, the animals seem so much happier it's more of a spa lol than a prison.
