A day at the vet's office Empty
PostSubject: A day at the vet's office   A day at the vet's office EmptySat Jun 29, 2013 3:03 pm

Finally found Kenzi a vet that lives closer than 2 hours away. While waiting she got to see her first kitten and did better than expected since she hates our neighbor's cat. While the kitten mewed she just watched quietly. After getting her a booster shot and micro-chipped she tried to eat a terrier in the waiting room, nearly made another terrier in the waiting room pee itself, and was totally okay with a hound puppy and the kitten from earlier. confused

If I had known Petco was having an adopt-a-thon today I wouldn't have bothered going by for bitter spray.  Kenzi spotted another husky from across the whole store and was growling so loud the owner of that dog could hear her and decided to go through the cat section to get to the back rather than go anywhere near us. It's frustrating having people look at me like I'm an idiot for taking my heathen of a dog out in public.Does anyone else's dog have adverse reactions to certain other breeds of dogs? Beagles and Huskies have been her worst reactions to date.

On the bright side, got to work on some focusing exercises another member suggested. I got her to sit during the terrier incident and look away. Unfortunately she sat staring at the counter and still growling wildly. A day at the vet's office 1625187496  Progress I guess? Going to take her to my parents house to meet my old dog tomorrow. I hope everyone has a better weekend with your huskies than I'm probably going to have with mine.

I swear Mishka is bipolar. During his puppy class, the first couple of weeks he was a complete ass to everyone. Then he wanted to play with everyone, but by the end of the class day he was an ass again. I just didn't get it.

He's usually kind of iffy when he first meets a dog, but after a few minutes he tries to play with them. Sometimes to his disappointment. Lol.

A day at the vet's office Empty

Apparently Snoopy reacts violently to yellow labs, and he's leery of other labs. I've been working with him and he does great with ignoring other dogs while we're at Petco but last time we were there he saw this yellow lab and went nuts. Flew out to the end of his leash, hair all puffed up, growling and screaming. I had to drag him into another isle to break his concentration on that one. I don't know if there's a reason or not as I didn't get him as a brand new puppy, but I think he may have had an experience with one.

A tip for working on concentration exercises, she can't already be over her thresh hold. If she's already growling or barking then she's already over thresh hold and this will make it much harder to train her. The key is starting at a distance that the dog is comfortable and reward for concentrating on you. You'll have to gage you're own dog to make sure your dog is comfortable in the situation before moving closer, like going into the store. Don't rush it, take your time. I had to take Snoopy to Petco and just hang out in the parking lot a few different days before he was able to go in the store without reacting to other dogs. It wasn't something I wanted to waste gas on but it's something I knew I needed to do because I have a friend that has dogs and we work our dogs together occasionally and we want our dogs to be safe and secure in the situations we put them in.

When I first brought Kenzi home and we had the bad encounter with our other dog (Beagle mix) she was really wound up for a while after and pacing the house. I have potted plants in front of a window with little pot charms you might call them. There's a couple owls and a Beagle that just stick down in the dirt. She spotted these, raced over, plucked the Beagle from its pot and chucked it across the room. She has randomly walked over and bit this little statue a few times since we got her and has never bothered the owls. It's so weird.

Her thresh hold seems to be about 10 ft unless the dog is walking toward us then it could be a football field depending on the day/breed. Usually when we go to Petco she's alert to other dogs in the store but won't growl unless they are within about that range or they are making a lot of noise. The Husky reaction was a first for how far apart they were. Usually she would just watch until they get closer. Frankly I was amazed she would sit for me period at the vet's office.

I'm going to try some different stuff with her tomorrow introducing her to my old dog that still lives at my parents house. Not a Beagle nor a Husky and a male which I have noticed makes a difference. I feel safer testing her with him because I know he will listen to me and he's older and calm. Of all the dogs I need her to get along with the two at my parents are the most important since I'm there working on cars a lot and I have all day to ease into it.

How did the day go with the dogs?

Her threshold being ten feet is great! Although her signs may just be more subtle. If she's fixating or stuck looking at the other dogs but not making aggressive noises or acting aggressively but you can't get her attention without a correction, then that's still over threshold. Try to keep that in mind.

I hope your weekend went well!

Before 10 feet she will notice and take note of another dog but she has no problem moving onto another aisle in the store or paying attention to me if I'm talking to her or wanting her to do something. Meeting my old dog went pretty well. I was surprised. There was a little bit of growling but things calmed down probably the fastest they ever have for her. She had a couple rows with my dads old female bird dog but they sorted things out and now things are peaches and cream and they have no problem. If Kenzi wouldn't jump on my old male trying to get him to play he would be much happier with her. By the end of the day she didn't even care about my moms cat so at least I have a place now where she can spend time with other dogs. At least once they get the fleas under control. That was definitely a sad point to the weekend. I hate fleas.

Good to hear that it went well! Kenzi has a lot of room to grow and I think you're going to do a great job with her with the right consistency. And I hope Kenzi doesn't get fleas!

Thank you! I want to do good by her. Only a couple fleas and I think I have them under control. One battle down, next battle...not eating every melted tootsie roll on the side of the road. A day at the vet's office 1625187496

Well Balon and Loki love my lab Ruby, if outside on leads they will bark at anyone walking a dog, but if the other owner allows me to bring them closer they are all tails wagging lol
