PostSubject: Kitty Treats?    Kitty Treats? EmptyWed Apr 11, 2012 12:06 pm

So, to some this may sound disgusting who don't have cats, but to those of us who do maybe able to relate to me.

We're having a big problem with Hayden sneaking into the basement and eating our cat's poop! It's so gross and I don't know how to make him stop! I bought a new litter box with a cover and a door, but Hayden STILL gets in it! I can't put it up high or the cat's won't use it. I've made the basement off limit's to all my dog's, but hard headed Hayden still sneaks down there!

Has anyone come up with a solution to keep their pups away from the crunchy munchies?? scratch

That's actually a common problem for cat/dog households considering how many times I've seen this brought up on various dog forums. For a dog as large as a husky you could put the cats litter box inside something so the smaller cat can get under and into the box but that the sibe is too big to get into. I've even seen covers that have the cat go under and then up over a short lip to allow cats but not dogs.

Or keep better tabs on Hayden...don't let the bugger outsmart you!

Maybe I'll have to order a different box or something. Thanks Val!

As far as keeping tabs on him, he only does it when he knows we're busy. LOL he's too smart for his own good. Like if I step into the bathroom for even a second, he bolt's down those stairs or running out to grab the mail or even just talking on the phone! He jump's at every opportunity, so the only thing I can think of is getting a different box like you mentioned.

We used to have the litter box in a place where it was almost like a closet (we had the water heater in there as well as could store laundry crap) We put a baby gate up and lifted it up about 6 inches so it was enough to have the cats jump over or crawl under but the Huskies couldn't. That solved our problem. Now we have the cats in a separate area of the house most of the time (unless they run out, which they do all the time.) So placement isn't as much of an issue as it was before. Seems the only way to stop the problem is keep the pan protected behind a door or a gate.

Actually that's an awesome idea and I think I'm going to just go buy a baby gate tonight! The box is currently in a separate in the basement, so the gate would work perfect. Thanks a lot Kristina that'll be a lot easier than ordering a whole new box, which is still a good idea too. Smile I may end up doing both, just to ensure no doggies are dipping into the box.

Yea we just used a baby gate. We put it up off the floor a little so the cats can go under it but the dogs can't. Also if there is door you can put in one of those kitty doors. Our box is in the garage now so we put a kitty door on both doors from the laundry room to the garage.

If you give your cats wet food, you can give them MSG. It is completely harmless, and it alters the taste of the poo. The dogs HATE it, and they will stop eating the treats. We did it for about 3 years, and never had an issue with the dogs eating the treats. We ran out of MSG recently, and now they all are back in the litter box.

Our trainer recommended it to us as a cheap alternative to "high tech" litterboxes that clean constantly, or keep dogs out.

Just a suggestion Smile

We do the baby gate here, which will work until the little spaz figures out she can jump it. If that ever happens, we're going to put a kitty door in the door to our laundry room that is too small for Ghost to get through. A friend of mine does that at her house and it works really well.

We had a dog growing up who was *obsessed* with eating poo out of the litter box, and we got one of the covered ones, turned it around backwards, and wedged it between the washer and the wall. The cat could still get into it, but the dog couldn't squeeze into the small space.

lol! lol! lol! lol! lol!

That had me cracking up!

We have baby gates in every door way at our home as well, but I forget to shut them, which is why we had to revert to the MSG. I can't get over the baby gates, and so we got swinging ones, but if mom forgets to close it.... well, ya.

For example: Right at this moment, the huskies are laying on the bed, eating their chicken bc mom forgot to shut them in the kitchen and went to the office. Mad Sheets will be washed tonight!
