How to get rid of urine smell off of fur Empty
PostSubject: How to get rid of urine smell off of fur   How to get rid of urine smell off of fur EmptyWed Sep 18, 2013 3:00 pm

Our 14 1/2 year old Denali started leaking about a year ago. We got pills that helped stop it and had no problems up until about 2 weeks ago. She started leaking again but we didn't catch it for awhile because she had been outside a lot. I noticed it one day when I caught the stench of it. We have since increased he meds on the advice of her vet and it seems to have stopped it again. The problem is that the urine soaked he fur so bad that it stained it. We have tried washing it out several times but the smell still remains but not as bad. It only intensifies after we brush her. Does anyone know what else we can do to get rid of the odor?
Thanks.

Our vet gave us a remedy for skunk smell, maybe it would help? Its just toothpaste, any type, rub it in nice and good, let it dry about 10 minutes then bathe it off.
Good luck!

That's a good idea, I was also thinking making a paste of baking soda and water might work, but I like the toothpaste idea better. She'll be minty fresh lol.

I would also try white vinegar. Or, 'distilled vinegar'.

"As it turns out, something about the acidic property of vinegar is able to neutralize the nitrogen bonds in urine and thus remove every trace of the odor (along with static in the dryer and greasy finger smudges on my glass doors)."

I would hope that it doesn't give Denali a negative reaction to her skin, but you can never be too sure. Try to not let it get in contact with her skin if you can.

I have not tried this, but what about orange or lemon juice? Citric acid to do like the vinegar but with a better after smell? Kudos to Jackie the vinegar is what made think "what if".

OK, I did the toothpaste thing and it work some. The stench is gone but if you get close enough, you can still smell it a bit. I am gonna get some more and try once again this weekend.

One other thing I thought of, goat bucks smell horrible during the breeding season. They secret a nasty smelling musk on top of there heads plus to add to the wonderful order they wiz on there face (yeah I know gross, but if you were a female goat this is what you would be looking for in a mate). Any way, the smell gets on your hands and clothes and what gets rid of most of the smell is either Orange goop or orange go-jo water less hand cleaner.
