PostSubject: Socializing my Puppy husky with other dogs   Socializing my Puppy husky with other dogs EmptyTue Jan 07, 2014 4:52 pm

So my pup is about 7-8 week old
Just got his first vet visit and first vaccine shot plus micro chipped.

Asked the vet when would be a good time I can take my dog to dog parks etc and she said after all vaccines (about 18 weeks)

So 18 weeks plus the 8 weeks he already he will be 6-7 months

And I read if you don't socialize puppy with other dogs with in the 4 month period that it becomes difficult later.

So any advice or info you all can give me with your knowledge and experience would be very greatful id really like to take him before that 6-7mo time frame.

What you do is get together with dogs that you know are vaccinated and owned by people you trust and have them play and socialize.

The problem with the parks is that they are open to anyone and there is no way to know about vaccination status or health of the dogs there.

The general idea is to avoid high traffic areas where dogs are present. You definitely do not have to avoid outside or the public for six months. You just want to keep him away from dog centered spaces where there is urine and poop everywhere.

We had playdates all the time with friend's dogs when Link was really young.  It is critically important that you find a way to socialize him with other dogs and with people out and about, as well as all of the various situations around the area that you live in, that much is true.

Puppy play classes and training classes are wonderful too and they provide very good, structured play and training time with socialization. These are all going to require a set of vaccinations and so the safety is trustworthy.

Thanks for the fast replies
I know it's crucial to get him socialized early so that he won't have problems later
So when the vet told me that time frame I was like ugh okay ... I'll go ask others for advice see what they say

Luckily I live on a military base so the dogs in this park have to be up to date with their shots

And thanks I am definetly thinking about training classes
My moose has already learned sit, stay and come

The vet probably just meant dog parks. In most places taking a puppy under 4 months of age in is illegal due to immunity issues and diseases.

It's be great if you can find other puppies his age to play and romp with, as well as some adult dogs so they can show him the ropes and check him and teach him boundaries and appropriateness with manners.

Good luck and enjoy this period. It flies by faster than you think.

I started taking Juneau to the dog park at 4 months. She was fully vaccinated by then. She was still small enough to go to the small dog side. Just watch out for dog poop and make sure she doesn't get in any. Watch the behavior of other dogs too. With you being on base, I'm sure others will have to be fully regulated, so you'll be safer most likely.

Siberians are typically happy go lucky with all dogs and people, but you'll be safe if you start at 4-5 months if you want (as long as they're fully vaccinated).
