Backpacking in snow. Boots? Empty
PostSubject: Backpacking in snow. Boots?   Backpacking in snow. Boots? EmptySat Apr 05, 2014 12:49 am

Hello everyone. I'm going backpacking near Lake Tahoe next weekend in desolation wilderness. I'm taking my sibe Bane. He has been in the snow before and loves it. Backpacking May be a little different. I'm wondering if I should get boots for him. I'm not sure how well he would deal with being in the snow for 4 days. I know I could use petroleum jelly or something like that but I don't want him to be miserable or injured. So the question is, for a 7 mile hike through the snow and 4 days in the wilderness, should I get him boots or not? Thank you for any and all input.

Some snow is fine- corn snow or dry powder.
Breakable crust, not so good.
You never know.
Sometimes ice sticks to their fur in between the pads.

Get some booties; you'll want to have them for backpacking in summer.
This from someone who blew out his dog's pads on volcanic rock.
It was ugly.
And I felt guilty, because I was.

Dogbooties.com is the best place for booties, get 8 so you have back ups. Better safe then sorry and I would use them for 4 days on the snow

I hike with Polar a lot in Colorado powder, and after trying anything I can think of to keep booties on her in deep snow, I pretty much gave up on booties. Since your trip is 4 days, I'd still recommend taking booties along "just in case", for injuries and such. I don't know what kind of snow conditions you'll be encountering, but for deep powder, there is just no way to keep the booties on Polar all the time. For day trips I don't even bring her booties anymore, and we routinely do 7-10 miles day trips in Colorado powder. Usually there will be some ice build-up between her toes, but she stops and chews them off herself.

Duct tape around the velcro at the top works for me keeping them on.
Not on the dog's fur!
