| Hello, this is one of my first posts, I'm mostly a lurker! I swear I've read it here somewhere about redundant clips/attachments in case a collar/harness fails when out and about with your dog, but I can't find them now that I want to know how to do it. We were using a sensible harness and I attached the leash to both Timber's Flat collar and his harness. he still pulled like a madman, but I put up with it. a Herm Sprenger pinch collar was recommended to me by a local boarder/doggy day care provider. she had one on him and she put it on my arm when I complained that it looked like a torture device. After testing it on my arm I bought it. Timber doesn't really care for it, but he doesn't pull me around like he did on just a flat collar and the sensible harness. I've read that the metal collars can fail, and I'm wondering how to attach the leash to both the herm sprenger collar and his flat collar at the same time. I just can't wrap my brain around the logistics of it. Can anyone help? |

| That would have been me - I use "redundant" collars as follows: I have a bungie leash that is attached to the prong collar. Having read that the prong collars can sometimes fail, I got another collar, an ordinary nylon webbing collar with a side release buckle. That is attached to another leash (for me, it has reflective tape in it), first by looping the handle of the 2nd leash around the bungie leash handle and the second leash is then wrapped loosely around the bungie leash and the second leash shackle is attached to the redundant collar. The second leash is wrapped loosely so that pulling activates the prong collar before there is any tension on the second leash. Since I find the bungie leash a tad too short, both leashes are then attached to a third (my bungie leash has a brass o-ring between the bungie and the non-stretch handle. I use the snap shackle to attach to o-ring, thread the leash through the handle and loop it around so the bungie handle doesn't drag. When I take Ami for a walk, the collars are already attached to the leashes - I put on the prong collar first, closest to his ears, next comes the spare collar. His permanent collar is last on his neck (closest to his shoulders) and carries his ID tags, rabies tag and license tag. That collar never comes off except briefly while grooming and only in the house. You could accomplish the whole thing much more elegantly by using carabiners or quick connects If you go to my scrapbook, scroll through the pictures - you can see how his leash is connected (or, if you will, jerry-rigged ) |

It has not failed. https://www.itsahuskything.com/t3638-prong-collar-popping-open?highlight=prong+collar Mannnn, Michael - that is so much simpler and so much more elegant than my jumbled get-up. Though, in part, mine is also for leash failure and to extend the length. BUT, you have a thread on here someplace on how to make a leash out of climbing webbing that I'm going to emulate when the current rig wears out... |

| Thanks Amy and Michael, I'm going to rig something up tonight. I need some good carabiner's. I bought some Coleman ones at Target and one of them already broke! I was wondering how often leashes fail and if that was something I needed to worry about..... |
