2 year old husky out of control! Empty
PostSubject: 2 year old husky out of control!   2 year old husky out of control! EmptyTue Aug 05, 2014 1:32 am

My Siberian husky just turned 2. Ive had him since he was a puppy. Hes always been pretty well behaved, a typical stubborn husky. About a week ago he started acting out of control. He tore up his metal kennel (hes always been been put in there when we leave and has never had trouble with it). So we left im out in the house and he normally does good with that just gets doesnt like being left out. He did pretty good for a few days and then he tore up my carpet! He then started getting out of our fenced In yard (weve lived here his whole life and never had a problem before) I had to get a leed to keep him in. Im going to buy another kennel but im worried hes just going to tear it up as well. Someone please help me figure out what to do with this sudden change in my dog. Hes driving me crazy!

Oh no, I hope this is not what I have to look forward to..... Is he fixed? If not maybe there's a female close by that he's interested in? Does he get enough exercise? Have you switched your routine some? Has something changed in your home? Sorry for all the questions, but definitely need to know more on what's going on.

Sounds like you have a bored teenage husky begging you for activity.

How much exercise does he get daily?
They need a lot of exercise and a sence of work. They are bred to run and run and run. So jogging, biking, rollerblading are great starts if not doing any of these already. Most huskies have a minimum of 3-5 miles of walking a day as well. You have to keep their mind active at all times of the day.

When not keeping them active and not under your care i.e while you are working or absent from the house, they should be crated. I am sorry to hear yours has been destroyed, however, I highly suggest you replace it. Crates keep the husky safe, and prevents things like your carpet from getting ripped up. Only if they have been properly tired out before hand.

If you feel he is already getting adequate activity in the amounts listed above, and he still promotes these behaviors, then you should seek help from a professional trainer to pinpoint the issues to be corrected more personally.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Ps. Welcome to the forum, we love pictures!! Smile

Also what types of chew toys does he have? Sounds like your boy might like antlers! Smile Mine is a heavy chewer, and antlers keep her chewing heavily occupied.

Great advice Lucy. Still wondering on my questions though, something obviously has changed, I know I'm not looking forward to the terrible twos, but I also know two things about huskies....1- a tired husky is a well behaved husky. and 2- huskies thrive on routine. Just wondering if one of those things are missing?

And yes welcome to the forum, we love pics  wave

Thanks for all the replies! Frostbite is not fixed but I think ive decided im probably going to have to. None of his routines have changed. About 2 months ago our neighhbor got a female dog that he loves. Shes Still very young and they play through the fence together. But when he gets out he goes to other houses. He gets exercise but running around the yard and some chew toys. Lately ive been taking him to the dog park once a week. I guess he could use more exercise and I was ganna by him some new chew toys today. I was thinking one were you put toppings in the middle.

Sounds like he needs a lot more exercise than that.
Ours walk 6km per day, our 3 year old does this with about 10 pounds of weight on her. Chew toys are not going to cut it, you need to walk him a lot more.

I think part of your problem is he is not fixed. My neighbors 3 year old husky is not fixed and is out of control as well. First place he goes is our house and if Miya is not out off he goes. Lucy gave you great ideas, like I told my neighbors getting him fixed and a ton of exercise will more than likely calm him down a little. You can try that chew see how it goes, and maybe pick up an antler, many of us here use antlers for the big chewers. They get bored quickly, despite routine, so having multiple chews works. Second part he needs way more exercise, if your not into walking maybe biking, he needs more than yard play. Please get him fixed, males are cheaper and easier than females. If it's the cost check your local humane society or rescue, many give vouchers that make the surgery affordable.
Btw handsome guy, we need more pics, lol

Oh look at that handsome boy Smile

You should definitely look into getting him fixed. It won't solve all your problems, but it will help with him calming down a bit, and give you an open door for him to listen to you again.

Dogs, especially huskies, can't feel fulfilled from backyard exercise alone. I personally don't have a fenced in backyard so all of my dog's exercise comes from hands on with me. I fear the day I get a backyard because it is tbe lazy way of getting your dog exercise. Huskies need to travel. Else they will get bored. You can't even take the same routes on normal walking times. I change my route to 4 different routes randomly everyday. Just so she feels like there is some sort of adventure. Dog parks are great. I take mine as often as I can. However, in my opinion, dog parks are not exercise. Yeah your dog will get tired, it is exercise, you just shouldn't look at it like it is. They are socialization only. If you went to a dog park, you shouldn't get out of normal walking/running routines. It isn't fair to your dog.

I agree chew toys aren't going to cut it. I was merely suggesting in addition to a fuller exercise routine, that an antler would help redirect the desire to chew on objects of intrinsic value to the humans. Smile

But yeah invest in a bike or rollerblades, or a scooter.. or just jog.. if you don't have any. Go to alpineoutfitters.net ?? I think it is .net, if not google them. Pick up some bike jorring stuff (if you don't know what you need to get, do a search on this forum for jorring) pick up some mushers secret, because every running husky needs some sort of paw pad protection.

As Renee suggested, you may qualify for a voucher to get him neutered. If not there is usually those vet vans that do it for way cheaper than a conventional vet. You can just look up their schedules online for one near you.

Good luck!
