Hey everyone! We just got some fresh snow so after work we are gonna get a quick snowboard run in! So excited!
I'm bringing Aurora with me and she just turned 5 months old yesterday, she's growing so fast Sad

Anyways, we'll be hiking up to the top then riding down. well, she'll be running Smile
I wanted to get an idea if it would be too much for her at this age or if it'd be OK. It's about 1.5 miles from top to bottom, so about 3 miles total since we'll be hiking up. We did the same thing a couple weeks ago but we only went maybe half way up because I wasn't sure what was too much.

What do you think??

From a formulaic perspective it is too much, on paper.

It does matter that it'll be in snow, which will both slow her down considerably and provide some cushion, as compared to it being on concrete. It's not commonly taken into consideration but surface has to matter from just a physiological perspective in the formula for exercise.

The overall distance is not as important as the pace and the physical impact on her legs, which is what you really have to contemplate.   I see a lot of relevance to the idea that they freely need to ability to stop and chill on their own terms, which would be difficult if you are on a snowboard and she's running downhill.

Hiking 3 miles total in snow at a slow pace with a 5 month old is one thing, having her run down a mountain is another.  It's really difficult to say a catch all, objective yes or no.

Personally, I would do the slower hike, not the running while snowboarding.

I would say that is too much. The rule of thumb is 5 minutes of walking per month. So she should be walking 25 minutes at a time. You can do this a few times a day, but its about as far as I would go. A hike up and run down would be too much on her developing joints.

Exactly, Kelly. If you're on a snowboard going downhill she will want to run with you and keep up.

It is so tempting because this is more or less why so many of us get huskies, but she's still a puppy so she's clumsy and uncoordinated and reckless still and she will very likely push herself too hard for her own good.

Also keep in mind, say you do it with her and she does fine, which is quite possible.

That doesn't mean that it wasn't bad for her. The damage done is in large considered long term, so it may not be immediately noticeable. The damage warned against is cumulative, not necessarily acute here and now.

Thanks everyone! Yeah I know she could definitely handle it and be just fine "today", she loves to run! especially with the colder temps and fresh snow, she just comes alive! even more alive than the crazy hyper husky puppy she already is haha. but I don't want to have it affect anything long term.

and yes, with me on a snowboard she loves to follow and will run run run so I take lots of breaks to force her to stop.

We'll just go about half way up again then to keep it short. I also keep her on leash on the way up to minimize how much she is running around for that portion of it too. then on the way down I just take random stops so she isn't constantly running. even though she hates the stopping part and just stares at me like "c'mon! lets go!" haha.

She is really good at following though, we've practiced with mtn bikes and snowboarding. I definitely can't wait until she is old enough to start pushing me further on our activities.

You wait till they are a year or year and a half old to run. That is all.
