biting - Biting hard while playing Empty
PostSubject: Biting hard while playing   biting - Biting hard while playing EmptySat Jan 22, 2011 2:31 am

So Kody has started biting pretty hard while playing. Mya never really wants to play with him and I've noticed that he bites her pretty hard. I know that he's just playing, but i'm sure it hurts her and she gets upset with him. He bites my husband and I a lot also and it hurts! I correct him by closing his mouth and telling him " no, soft Kody". He fights me doing that of course, but I try to hold him for a few seconds. The minute I let him go he bites me again. I ignore him after that, but then he goes after Mya. He spends all day in his crate while we're at work and it breaks my hear to put him back in there when he does that. Plus, I don't want him to think the crate is a negative place, right? Pretty annoying!

Any suggestions?

To correct this problem I would use the same correction methods as discussed in the following thread previously posted about puppy nipping behavior.

Husky Nipping

Bite inhibition and training is pretty much the same for both circumstances. I wouldn't allow biting with people period, even if it is softer or mouthing. I'd nip that in the bud right away.

As for Mya, is she not the pack leader between the two of them? Most dogs take matters into their own hands and will correct another dog who is too rambunctious or rough. Her way of correcting the situation seems to be ignoring Kody and that's fine. Maybe one day she'll give him a more physical correction and that will take care of that. I'd work on stopping the human biting interaction and let the dogs take care of themselves so long as their is no real harm or danger presented.

My sibe is definitely the leader of my pack and he will give a physical correction to my chi girls if they step out of line. It's amazing, he clearly knows his limits and will correct them enough to "shock" them out of their inappropriate behavior but without hurting them. It's just amazing to see in action. Smile Good luck with the training!

You are the boss, so if he is getting too rough with her you have to stop him from doing it. The way to do this depends on if he is a soft or a hard dog. You should try the above mentioned things first, but if this doesn´t work you will hav eto use physical correction if you like it or not.

My cat used to do this until I started YELPING like a wounded creature when he did it. Now he doesn't DARE put his teeth in me... Continue to play with him and if he bites you, YELL like it REALLY HURTS, then ignore him for about 30 seconds. He'll catch on that biting isn't OK.

Loki is a pretty mouthy puppy, he likes to nip at the other dogs and tries to be mouthy with us. Yipping really loud seems to help and get him to stop. He is doing it significantly less with us. He was doing it a lot with my pug trying to paw at her face and bite on her until my pug got tired of it! She went after him big time! And every time he got close to her and put his paw up she would go after him not really biting but scared the fur off of him! She is a tough little dog! And I was so worried that he would retaliate and attack her but he immediately backed off and laid down and respected her space! I was extremely impressed! Its pretty funny that a small little pug made a husky tuck his tail and run lol!

You know what? You're totally right! How did I not think of that? LOL. When Mya would bite us hard we would scream like it hurt and she would come licking us like oh man my bad..LOL

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread. I've had Freya not quite 24 hours and already she's ripped a hole in my pyjamas and tried to eat shoes right off my feet, pulled hair out of my head and sunken her teeth into fingers and toes.
She's not incredibly mouthy, but I've got 2 young boys (Ages 5 and 3) so I want to put a stop to it asap.

There is some really good advice here, and I'm going to try all of it Smile
