How fast to bike with husky? Empty
PostSubject: How fast to bike with husky?   How fast to bike with husky? EmptyFri Oct 09, 2015 10:26 am

With the recurrant foot pain, I've wanted to add biking...until Wayne mentioned it might take 5 miles on the bike to equal 1 mile of walking (for ME to get the exercise, too, which is really the top priority.)

Anywhoo...I looked it up.  I would have to bike 7 miles at 13.5 mph to equal the exercise output of 1 mile at 2 mph.  To equal my average pace and distance of 3.4 miles per walk, that converts to 31 miles at 13.5 mph affraid

So, the question...how fast do sled dogs run on the trail?  Ami/Archer won't be pulling - I have a WalkyDog which is a side attachment, they just need to keep pace beside me.  Is 13.5 mph for 1 hour and 15 minutes doable for a husky?  I know I would have to build them up to that at first (and me too...my sitter would surely rebel if I immediately went for over an hour of biking Rolling Eyes )  Or do I give them their exercise on the bike and I haul out the stupid Nordic Track for me (different foot motion/position so doesn't seem to elicit the same pain.  But I hate indoor exercise.)

I don't think they run that fast consistently. I would say close to 6-8mph would be what they could handle for long periods of time.

They'll get those spurts where they run faster but as far as keeping them at that pace (and yourself) that's really quite fast to keep up for that long of a time.

Maybe Lani (HuskyMom09) will have more insight though?

Ashleigh, that's what I thought...I'm hoping Huskymom chimes in, too. I imagine, if I go half the speed I have to double the time...or, keep the gearing so I'm really spinning the pedals. Ugh...I hate my joints, they are a PIA!

I do not think you can do this to a dog without hurting them. Think about Iditarod dogs only average abt 5mph.
