PostSubject: Update on Luna.   Update on Luna. EmptyThu Feb 04, 2016 6:04 pm

I just wanted to give an update on Luna. She's doing good. The diarrhea has stop ( except with different food). She was on probiotics and that seemed to help a lot, so we decided to keep her on it, probably forever. She's 27 pounds as of Feb 02, 2016. She's a very happy and hyper pup. We're still working on the training and we're going to be putting her into doggie school as soon as we can. For the most part she's well behaved but when she's around others she gets to excited and doesn't listed or she just gets a hair up her butt and wants to act like she can do whatever she wants. We're still working on her pulling, jumping and nipping when playing habit but we'll get there. We go to the park a lot and adventures on the weekends. We actually had to get an SUV for more room for her. She loves to go on adventures. We're going to start taking her camping with us soon. We actually put of tent up in her pen to test out how she would act and she loved it. She knows when I put her collar on and get her bag, that we're going somewhere fun.
Thank you all for the help and support on my many freak outs. It means a lot to know that I can come to y'all for help and advice.

Jessica, good to hear Luna is doing well, and puppy classes will help a bunch for you and her. I was having similar issue with my Sofie, and I switched her to a lower protein, lower fat and a higher fiber kibble and that has helped a bunch, she takes pills ok, and the probiotics weren't very expensive, I just hate having to give her pills all the time. What food was it that you are feeding?

She eats Blue wilderness. She's never had a problem with it. Even with the food the breeder gave us, it would upset her stomach. The vet thinks it might just be a normal thing for her. She love's her probiotic. I mix it in water and she sits and drinks. She loves it. I was hoping to avoid putting her in school because its so expensive but she gets to out of control and that's not good when we take her places.

Jessica, she does have problems with her food. Constant tummy upset is an intolerance to something in her food. Overall most vets do not go to school for feeding and nutrition. More importantly they rather prescribe something vs finding out what the actual cause is. I am confident your vet is skilled in small animals, but few and far between most vets are not that skilled on what to feed your pet. Since Blue just lost their law suit, and overall before the lawsuit, huskies here a 50/50 chance that they will not do well on Blue. i am trying to help, so please don't take this negatively. What was the breeder feeding, it will shed light on what may affect Luna.

well I looked at 3 of their puppy food and all 3 were over 30% protein. That is quite high for a puppy, high protein diets are more suited for an adult dog who is working. Also all 3, even the red meat version contained chicken and chicken is a very common reason for what we call "pudding" poop. The Bil Jac's issue wasn't too high in protein, to me, the problem is they use corn which many huskies can not tolerate and chicken, again a source for some dogs to not tolerate. I would look for a grain free like Blue, but in a protein that is not chicken, and protein %'s around 25.

No problem, in some dogs it can. With my older girl her issue is corn = pudding poop, with my puppy it's looking like too high of a protein, I tend not to feed kibble with chicken, so I am not sure with her, but I was feeding a 32% kibble, and when I lowered it to 25% poops got better. Many times it's trial and error, and sometimes they will grow out of it. After she has reached adulthood you can try a higher protein, but for now I would stay between say 23-27% with Sofie 25% seems to be spot on for her.

Also on the puppy classes, if it involves you going with her, I think it will be very beneficial to you. With inexperienced dog owners and specifically inexperienced husky owners taking a puppy class with your pup will help you build a better relationship, and make your life less frustrating. Yes it can be expensive, but it will pay off for you, in your confidence in raising and training Luna.

I've always had rottweilers, so Huskys are new to me. She definitely needs classes. I'm jus doing research of different classes right now to find the best.

Jessica I think a basic class will help, try looking for a group class, so she has to learn focus in a busy setting. Rotties are different, some things cross over amongst breeds, not sure if the hyperness and stubborness is a Rottie thing, but all in all should help.

With the food....I would try Fromm"s Heartland Gold puppy, no chicken, no grains and around 25% protein. If you can't find it Chewy.com should carry it, may be slightly more money than Blue, but Fromm is one of the absolute best out there. It does say large breed, ignore that. If that is not in your budget, and you be watchful of recalls I do feed Taste of the Wild, they do have some selection, 2 different puppy, and they do offer 3 all life stage, so if Fromm wont work out then try that or if you have a Costco Nature's Domain maybe a good choice as well, I haven't looked at their foods lately, don't have a Costco, so you would have to look at the bags and see what %'s they offer, but I think would work as well.

Good Luck!!
