Hi! My dog is approaching five months and consistently has a liquid stool. He has gone to the vet and was put on medication to firm the stool but nothing has worked. He has been on Science Diet, a prescription bland food, and now boiled hamburger and rice. I am assuming that he has to be in pain. Has anyone experienced this? I know huskies are known for sensitive stomachs so if anyone could please recommend a food or any advice I would be so grateful! He acts like a normal puppy you would never know this was an issue. He is consistently gaining weight so that is not a concern either - currently32 lbs.

Thank you!!

Welcome to the forum.....this is a common problem, and if your pup has been checked and giardia and cococidia has been ruled out, then it is the food. Have you been feeding Science diet since getting the puppy? Many huskies do not tolerate grains in their diet at all, and will have diarrhea consistently. Hamburger can be too greasy for a pup as well. What I would try is getting a grain free kibble, and for 2 or 3 days boil turkey burger (it is less greasy, turkey is more bland, turkey is a more tolerable protein), double cook white rice, not a minute rice, include 1 tablespoon per meal of pure can pumpkin (not the pie filling), and 1 tablespoon per meal of plain greek yogurt or kefir. His poops should firm up in a day or two of that meal, then slowly mix in a grain free kibble, and increase kibble until all kibble. Good luck it is frustrating, and many vets are paid to sell you their brand of dog food and not understanding that many huskies just are not grain eaters.

Ditto Renee's advise.
What food was the dog on prior to coming home?
Then did you switch to another food once home and if so did you gradually transition from one to the other?
How long was the dog on the Science diet? how long has he been on the hamburger and rice?
Do any of these food have common denominators? i.e. grain, a specific protein (hamburger beef).

Do you know if he is constantly getting into something when you do not see... animal poop, eating plants, etc

I have merged these threads so we don't have to worry about being confused seeing the same name twice in the Recent Topics ticker. That is why there are duplicate messages from the OP.

I agree with Renee. If parasites or worms have been ruled out then it's probably the food. Science diet is not a good food at all.

Hello everyone! Thank you for all of the input. Juno had parasites but was cleared two weeks ago. When I brought him home he was on a food called sport mix.
This food was difficult to find so we slowly moved him over to the science diet. I see that blue buffalo has a grain free dog food line, would this be a good switch? Thanks again

I will say that what Juno has been eating since day one is not good at all. So making the switch I think will help him a bunch. many of us here are not that trusting of Blue, since they had a recent lawsuit. Dependent of your budget.....Fromm, Acana, Taste of the Wild, Diamond naturals, 4health(a tractor supply product) and Costco's Nature's Domain come to mind as quality foods, listed them in order of price for you. Most of us just check for updates if anything is recalled.

I would do the turkey meal I suggested earlier, for 2-3 days until poops are solid and slowly add in one of the brands I suggested.

ETA: Forgot about Victor's excellent kibble as well, and an in between in price, less than Acana and Fromm.

I wouldn't recommend Blue Buffalo because of the problems they've been having with their ingredients. By-products were found in their kibble but not listed on the packaging. It's unclear whether it was intentional or not (of course the company denies knowing about it). While certain by-products (bones, organs, etc) are fine, it's best to avoid them unless you know for sure what by-products they are. Certain by-products as the primary nutrition are not good (feathers, beaks, hooves, etc).

Grain-free foods are becoming more and more common. I'd recommend checking out a local pet store to browse the options, especially if you have a Petco or Petsmart nearby. Otherwise check out Chewy.com. They have a great selection.

Thank you everyone! You have been more than helpful. It's great to get some advice that actually helps! It is amazing how the vets get paid the big bucks but leave you without answers. Thank you!!!

Bump.

I'm having a similar issue with my dog's stool. I've purchased all these items (ground turkey, etc.). The question I have is have much food should I be giving my pup. He is 15 weeks and weighs about 28lbs. Thanks

Sorry I will be more specific with that meal....for him I would do 3 or 4 meals a day 1/2 cup total per meal of the rice, turkey, yogurt, and pumpkin. Good luck and ask any more questions you may have!

Give him some carrots. My girl (tmi) suddenly had horrible diarrhea from licking up coconut oil and I did not give her food/water for 12 hrs. After the 12 hrs I fed her carrots and she was back to normal. I don't think this is a permanent fix for your issue, but its worth a try. My girl is on Taste Of The Wild (found in Tractor Supply or Amazon) and her (tmi.. again lol) poop is very normal and consistent.

@Grizzly&Charcoal

That's what was suggested when I was researching what to do. I guess it gives their system some time to recover. It worked out for her because her (tmi) diarrhea was STRAIGHT liquid, lol. She did not go the full 12 without water - suppose I should have clarified that - cause I thought that was too much but I spread it out and didn't bring her out to play so she wouldn't get hot.
