Husky Pup Barking While I Eat Empty
PostSubject: Husky Pup Barking While I Eat   Husky Pup Barking While I Eat EmptyThu May 04, 2017 2:34 pm

Hi, I have a 5 month old husker. It first started with her jumping up on me whenever I had food. So I made sure to feed her after I eat so she can see that alpha eats first and she has to wait. I also worked on the "down" command. Which worked. She doesn't jump anymore (or if she does she gets down right away and backs away). However, now she barks non-stop while I'm eating. I've tried the "quiet" command (she listens to it all other times), or I just ignore her but she still won't stop barking. Anything else I can try?

"Alpha" tends to be so badly misused as to not even be funny. Whether you eat first, last or on the back porch doesn't matter IF you've taught your dog her manners.

It was, imho, the success with the down command that had much more effect than showing her you're the "alpha".

My dogs, and I have three, will join me in the kitchen; if I drop something it stays on the floor, "It's mine" or "go ahead" tell them whether they can get it or not. But that's not something that came about over night. (In fact one of them was very food aggressive and took a lot of work before she'd leave something I dropped.) I could have crated them while I was cooking but that doesn't really teach them anything, by allowing them in the kitchen they learned that what's mine is mine unless I choose to let them have it (this follows the idea of "alpha")

In your case ... a good course in NILIF (nothing in life is free, look it up) is in order. In summary - a pup gets nothing that they haven't earned somehow; if you have a crate, I'd crate her while I'm eating, if she's quiet then you reward her when you let her out after you're done eating - otherwise ignore her. In any case, let her bark while you're eating - but do nothing else - sometimes any attention (you getting upset) is better than no attention.

I don't subscribe to the alpha nonsense either. Honestly, I prefer to feed my dogs breakfast and dinner BEFORE I eat for the very fact that they will be less anxious for food and therefore better behaved while us humans eat. And believe me, it does not in any way take away from my position of authority over the dogs' and their behavior.

I agree with Val and Al, I actually prep their food as I prep ours, and they eat when we eat. They must wait to eat and be told to get their food. They do get done before us and they must lay down and "wait" until we are done, if they leave us alone they get a treat, normally a bite of what we had for dinner so they think they got what we had. If they are not quiet, pester, beg, or bother us they get nothing. While we eat we ignore them, and if we need to say lay down and wait they may get something if we don't repeat the command. If I had a pup that was loud I would start practicing shhh or be quiet, it does work with practice(they know to be quiet at night doing the be quiet shhh command). You have to be consistent, and you may have to do a few eh eh's, but your pup will get it.
