PostSubject: A Pet Deli   A Pet Deli EmptySun Feb 20, 2011 2:42 pm

My friend recently published her first childrens book and she attends some event every Sunday to promote it. Anyway, she happen to set up next to these folks and sent me their link. Once Kody is better as far as his tummy issues I thought this might be a good option for him (and Mya), but since I don't know much about pets nutrition I'm posting the link for your comments =)

We have something like this by us too. The only issue is that it's normally pretty expensive. I think Kody would probably do really well on a raw diet. And the raw would probably help with Myas weepy eye.

Am I blind, or is there no bone in what they offer?

I don't think they're offering it as a whole meal, more of a supplemental thing... "Mix this in to gain extra nutrition and support."

I think a raw diet would be excellent for Kody and Mya but you can probably do it cheaper, and better, buying the meat on your own rather than buying prepackaged mixes. Most prepared raw foods are quite a bit more costly than doing it yourself (you pay for balanced convenience). The prices for those foods are fairly decent actually but still more than if you were to prepare raw meals yourself. Aside from cost, I don't see that ratios of meat are listed anywhere...I see products like "Chicken Liver & Heart" listed and all it says about it is "Pure raw meat and organs. No grains, fillers, fruits or vegetables." I hope you'd be able to find out what amount is liver and what amount is heart more specifically before buying. In a PMR diet you'd want their diet to consist of roughly 80% meat, 10% organ, and 10% bone.

Tori, depending on the food you click, some of them do contain bone but not all. And when I say that I am assuming that when they list ingredients like chicken neck that it includes the bone.

While their prices do seem pretty reasonable I'd be much more comfortable buying my own meat and making my own dog's menu. Also be aware, Melissa, that even certain things on raw diets (like newly introduced or too much organ, or not enough bone) can result in soft or runny stool. I strongly believe raw diets are the best possible thing you can feed but do educate and prepare yourself in advance, it'll make the switch a whole lot easier and healthier on you and your dogs.

Kristina, Mya's weepy eye is really driving me nuts! She's so pretty, but it makes her look older than what she is =(

So, bones would be a must (or good thing) when feeding raw, right? Kristina spoke briefly about it at the meet up, but there's a lot of information to absorb..lol.

Val, I'm thinking that once Kody is back on track I'll look into the raw diet. I'm not going to start asking 100 questions now since i'm sure this would be months away. I'll read up on the raw diet thread.

On another subject...Kody ate not one but TWO of my husbands work socks on Friday night. I knew that he ate them b/c when I saw my hubby's work shoes infront of the bed with no socks in them...I knew it was Kody. Kody was fine until about 2hrs ago that he puked up a sock with all of the eggs I had red him for lunch and some carrots. After that he puked another 3 times, but just liquid. He was acting really done. Of course I started freaking out and was bout to take him to the animal hospital, but then he started puking again and the OTHER sock came half way out. My hubby saw it and when he went to pull it out of his mouth he swallowed it again!!!!

He's acting ok now. He's hungry and he's playing and everything. So i'm hoping and praying that he pukes it out sometime tonight or poops it out. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow morning.

Ughhh my little kodester! I didn't think I would freak so bad, but he literally had me in tears!

Poor Kody!!

My advice would be in this time of transition and food, I would keep an eye on him at all times. He IS going to be hungry. It's inevitable, but it's not forever and you need to remember that. So while he's hungry, and he's going to be looking for whatever he can, keep him either crated off, or gated off in rooms that are completely puppy proof. Don't give him the ability to get to something that he can harm himself on.

I think Hailey was eating blankets for a while because she was hungry. We upped her portions and she's since stopped, but it's still something we have to keep an eye on. If she continues, I'm going to start feeding her and Koda 3x a day. It takes some extra work, but it might be necessary to keep him safe.

Totally agreed! I've been after my hubby to put his stuff away! I put my stuff away...even if it's just throwing it in the closet! Plus I pick up after him! On Friday though, even though I was livid at him, I couldn't scream at him too much. We went to happy hour and he drank a bit too much. I went to sleep and apparently he took off his shoes and didn't think of putting the socks out of Kodys's reach. Now, I'm positive he's learned his lesson b/c he's so worried about Kody.

I feel like i'm always following Kody around the house to make sure he's not into anything. If he's out of my sight for a min I'm searching for him. Our house isn't too big so it's not like he has many places to go.

I'm not sure if he's eating the socks is b/c he's hungry. He's always had a sock issue. I've had to be hiding them since we got him. Maybe now it's worse, but geez....2 long work socks in one night!

Ughh my little Kody!

Thank goodness he got them both out okay. That could have been bad if it had caused a blockage. No No more socks, Kody!

I know Val...I was so worried! Sad He puked it out and he was about to try and it eat it again. My hubby had to pull him back by the tail (poor thing) and I had to grab that nasty sock covered in eggs btw...with my hand! Ewww! At that point I didn't care though.

Thank god that it came out! He's acting ok today. Ate his eggs this morning, played a bit with Mya, I took him for a walk, and now he's snoring.
