Winter coat not coming in Empty
PostSubject: Winter coat not coming in   Winter coat not coming in EmptyFri Dec 04, 2020 11:49 pm

Hi everyone, it's been almost 2 years since I've been back to this forum...but I am concerned about our husky, Ziva, and thought I'd reach out to you all here for info or advice. Ziva is a product of a puppy mill and has some of the usual health issues associated (bad teeth, cataracts at a young age). One new one is that she did not get her winter undercoat last year, and it looks like it's not going to come in again this winter. We live in NC, but it does get cold. I've left a couple of messages with the vet, but have not heard back from them yet. Wondering if it's her diet... I think I'm feeding her pretty well, but it's possible I could be doing that all wrong! We started feeding her Signature dry dog foods, but found they have too much "filler stuff" in it. Then we switched to Acana, it still has some of the filler, but seemingly a bit less. I usually lace their food with a little chicken soup (home made) or broth, or small pieces of raw meat.
Any ideas or advice? Thanks!

Also is she 100% husky or is she cross?

Mine are in the process of blowing thier summer coats right now. Maybe global warming? So far its been a warm (for the rockies) and dry.

So about that undercoat. Spider didnt get a real undercoat until around when she turned 3. It could very well be genetic. It could also be alopecia X or a zinc difficiency or a thyroid issue or a food allergy. Could also be coat damage from shaving or using the wrong brush, or cushings. There are also probably things specific to puppy mills that i didnt list.

From what I've read, it's common that a young dog won't blow coat or get a "winter coat" since they have one; it's after they lose their puppy coat that they start getting a 'normal' undercoat. As @lostmaniac says, 3 is about right for a good blow and new coat.
(( I have to say "from what I've read" my pups are all rescues and several years old when I get them so I don't get to "enjoy" all the puppy stuff a lot of folks do. ))

Thanks for the replies. She was only two when we found her, and for the first 2 years her winter coat came in nice a thick. Last winter her undercoat never really came in, and this year it looks like it's going to be the same. I definitely don't over brush her, as she will only sit for a minute or two for a brushing, and only every once in a while. I guess the best thing is to bring her to the vet. Thanks again!

So random but not so random question. Is your dog spayed/neutered? Alopecia x is specifically related to hormones. But yes your best bet is the vet
