Hello…my rescue husky is doing better at home now but we have a new problem. Any suggestions on how to train to stop barking and pulling on leash when other dogs are passing? He is usually good on the leash and he walks with my GSD. Everything is fine until he sees another dog. He goes into a fit of loud howling barks(that can wake up a neighborhood) and stomping/thumping and pulling on the leash trying to get out to go towards them. He is still new and we are in the adjustment period so I haven’t taken him to dog parks or had him interact with other dogs yet except our GSD. Also he is not neutered and his neutering appointment is this week. I am trying to use ‘leave it’ command or ‘no’. He usually responds to those commands except in situations with other dogs. I tried to walk away with the dogs when I spot another dog to avoid such situations until he is trained better but there are situations like today when the other dogs and their owners approach us too quickly and we cannot avoid them. I spotted the dogs(small fluffy bichons) and their owner and turned back with my dogs. But too late. Zorro was so loud that he brought neighbors out to see what the commotion was about. I held him by the martingale collar and tugged with a stern hush and he calms down finally after dogs are out of sight. Usually this is the routine…drama and a show for a few seconds until other dogs pass. Can it be corrected? I just don’t want us to be a nuisance in our neighborhood and there are kids playing on that street. I worry that ppl might term this as aggression.

Squirt used to be like that. Only squirt is VERY other animal aggressive. Here is what we did because i take her to very busy places on a regular basis. Not an instant fix.

Find a very high value treat to bring with you. When another dog passes i move slightly off the trail or sidewalk and put squirt in a sit while showing her the treat. When the dog passes she gets the treat. You can move that into a walk by holding the treat where squirt is more focused on my hand then the other dog. Fast forward awhile and we don't need treats. I prefer the sit with squirt because i know she is very other animal aggressive.

Its a simple redirection. But it will take time and patience. I think reading on counter conditioning would be really helpful for you. It also works on kids and horses.

I echo what Emily described. I used the same technique with my dog aggressive guy and now he's a joy to walk.

Hello…I tried the BAT method. I probably am
missing the cue and getting him to focus. When he sees another dog he just goes into a frenzy of leaping, barking and throwing a tantrum and waking up the whole neighborhood and treats aren’t working. We still need more work on that. However he seems to totally do fine in a dog park and running up to all the ppl for hugs and playing with all the dogs. So he isn’t really aggressive to other dogs but something about dogs approaching him on leash.

Not sure exactly when you are trying the redirect but seems maybe your doing it too late. Do it before the reaction. Ie you see a dog coming your way and zorro hasnt reacted yet.. that would be the time to start then work it too less time. Also find something that he likes above anything else, obviously the treats are not high value enough. Not the everyday treat but the one he will try to tske your hand off too get to. If you dont get a frenzied reaction to the treat find one that does get that reaction and only use it for walking.

For squirt its cheese, for spider its raw red meat, for shadow its his sqeaky bone and splinter is just too stupid to be trainable. You just gotta find the right thing.
