PostSubject: SO irritated with Athena today...   SO irritated with Athena today... EmptySun Jul 10, 2011 3:47 pm

She seems to be throwing a dominance fit. She won't go outside when I call her (she has in the past, she looks at me). She peed on the concrete, when I tried to guide her to the grass she snapped at me. We get inside and she wants to play and so she snaps at me again and paws at me.

I can't put her in time out or she will go for my hand again. WHAT DO I DO. I want to show her she is NOT the boss but am unsure of how to go about it. bom

you should keep her leashed to you and lead her everywhere you go so you dont have to reach for her. its a good bonding thing too. just a thought. may or may not work. sorry i can't add more Smile

Some things our trainer told us that may or may not work. We've never really had a problem with Aevyn, but here goes anyway~

-Use a Water Bottle to correct bad behavior. Don't look at her, don't acknowledge, just spray her with some water. She'll be confused, and you can praise her for being quiet/stopping whatever she was doing after a few seconds. This one didn't work for Aevyn all that well - it was a dream at first, especially with crate training, but afterward he got angry at the water and tried to snap at it. >_>;;

- Again, dont acknowledge her. If she doesn't get your eye contact, you aren't available. In most cases dogs are eager to please, with Aevyn, once he saw he wasn't getting anywhere, he tried something else (Like sitting in front of us waiting, because he knew that got praised before in the past)

- When it comes to showing whose 'boss' so to say, if Aevyn is misbehaving and we happen to DO catch eye contact, I'm never the first one to break it. I'm not really into the whole 'dominance' over your animal thing, because Aevyn is family, but I've never looked away first. I can't really say or not say that this helps, but we haven't had a whole lot of trouble with Aevyn anyway.

-Not that I've needed to do it, and I'm not sure how I feel about it - but a friend of ours at the dog park will stand over top of his dog and hold her down until she she realizes she can't be rough with the other dogs. She settles pretty quickly and behaves like a dream for the rest of her time there.

I wish I could be of more help - I'm not sure any of that is going to be any good for you, but Aevyn's been so surprisingly well behaved we haven't had much experience dealing with that kind of behavior.

I can say I have heard about the tethering your dog to you thing, I read about it in a non-aggressive training book. Both very good for bonding like snrose said, but also it teaches them that they need to follow your lead. I did this for a little with Aevyn to help him get the hang of leash walking and so he'd always be interested in my movements, not where his wanted to go.

Best of luck, keep us updated!

After watching my almost 8 month old acting rather strange today, I realized his behavior may have been caused by him going on his first "long" car trip yesterday. He was in the car for a total of about 2-1/4 hours to get to a family picnic where he had to stay on leash (NO ZOOMIES!) then he had to get back in the car for another 2-1/4 hours ride! Most huskies are like little ADHD children... if they can't "get the wiggles out" they will misbehave. I think my Sabaka had so much pent-up energy from yesterday that he was just not thinking straight all day today. He was very demanding and just a little bit nasty with my 10-year old son. The youngest in our family is the person he tries to dominate the most.

So... EXERCISE... lots of exercise! I think it does make them calmer and behave better. Exercise = Ritalin for Huskies!

You also must make sure that you follow through with making her obey you even if she did snap at you. Also, keep in mind, although it is considered bad parenting to bribe a child... bribing a dog is COMPLETELY acceptable!! Use those treats! Promising a treat is often the only way I can get Sabaka to come inside or to get in his crate, etc.

Good luck! Keep us posted on the progress.

I do NOT recommend standing over your dog when she acts like that. That's a Caesar Milan technique that I do not agree with for the average owner.

First off, how old is your pup? I looked through your past posts and couldn't find an answer to that.

My guess is she's about 6-10 months old, yes? She sounds like a pup entering the teenage rebellion years. ALL of your issues (biting, stubbornness, etc) are exacerbated by this. So here is my advice:

1. Google Nothing In Life Is Free training. If you don't already practice this, start doing so. If you do, take it up a notch. Make the tricks and demands harder. She needs boundaries, structure and discipline. Like Lisa said, raising a pup is A LOT like raising a child. Structure is necessary, but bribes are okay Wink This should help with the "dominance" you see in her.

2. Like Shannon said, in situations where you need to move her, leash her. Do NOT try to reach for her collar and pull if she is starting to be sensitive to it. You will only make it worse. Leash her everytime she goes outside to potty. Make her pee and poop in the same location. It's better for your yard and it gives her structure and routine.

3. For biting.... when she makes ANY contact with her teeth on your skin, yelp loudly and turn your back on her. Walk away from her and shut a door behind you. She needs to learn that putting her mouth on you will shut down ALL interaction (a privilege) that she gets from you. This takes patience and consistency, but it DOES work.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice guys! I love this forum. I took her to the vet today. He thinks that she has a UTI and gave her an antibiotic. She hasn't had to go since 9 this morning. I have been taking her out multiple times in an hour. So far today no accidents but she seems sleepy.

Oh and she's 6 months
