1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

Appa's eyes Empty
PostSubject: Appa's eyes   Appa's eyes EmptySat Sep 03, 2011 1:25 am

So, for the past 2-3 days Appa's eyes have been a little red with "goobers" in the corners. They don't seem to be bothering him. He's not batting at them or anything. We took him to the vet today. The vet said "probably allergies, give him benadryl 3x a day and give him this antibiotic pill with these antibiotic eyedrops just in case. My wife and I think the antibiotics are a little unnecessary... Are we crazy? Would you give him all three or start with just the benadryl and see if it clears up?

Personally I would do the benadryl and the topical medication. The pills seem like a bit much. The vets i work for don't prescribe pills for eye allergy issues Neutral now if he was itchy and biting and licking at his paws I would give all three.

Chili has the same thing, but the goobers only come out when the seasonal allergies hit me too! He actually had them a little this week but was fine since the spring. Try the benadryl, it'll make him a bit sleepy btw. Chillster's allergies did get better when we gave him salmon oil with each meal, though.

I'd do just the eye drops as directed. And the Benadryl as needed if you think it's necessary. I wouldn't do antibiotic pills unless absolutely necessary. I hate using Benadryl even unless absolutely necessary because it sends my boy into a drunken-like state for 4+ hours.

You may have a second opinion from another vet if you're not sure with your vet but I think your vet knows what he is doing. Smile

I think he does, but my wife and I are both medication avoiders. Meds tend to be a last resort for us, so those tendencies carried over to our pup. We've given Appa benadryl before (he got swarmed by some yellow jackets on our patio) and he doesn't act drowsy at all. We only used benadryl last night and his eyes looked way better this morning. We used both eyedrops and benadryl today and they're completely clear and white with no goobers already. Thanks for your input guys, it really helps to have lots of opinions to turn to that are backed with experience.
