So I have a problem, along with jumping which has gotten much better... Kiara likes to greet people by smelling them... Normal, however it isn't a graceful "let me respect your personal bubble" smelling. It's more like a nose dive bomb into someone's crotch or butt, like she just shoves her nose up there. Its pretty horrifying for people wearing skirts or dresses. It's really embarassing for them and for me, I'm just like "sorry it's her little initiation to new people in the house" I don't know how to control that cause she does it randomly.

Yes!!!!! So yes!!!!

Ripley doesn't seem to do it but Tika does it to everyone..... This is the one behaviour I wish I could correct as there are seldom people who will let me use their crotch as a test


We use the same Ideals as we do for the no jump problem..... We wait until she is sitting, and step between as needed and force a sit after.....


Tika no longer jumps on randoms.... but this behaviour is proving longer to correct

you just need to stay on top of her and tell her no when she does it, warn your friends coming over that she will do it and when she does let the friends know a head of time to nicely push her head away and say NO.

I hate when new people come over I sound like a crazy person "don't pet her!" cause she pees when she's too excited and she tried her hardest not to jump and when she can't resist she will jump up on her hind legs and not actually jump on the people which is a step.. But the crotch bombs are pretty bad.

Something else you could try is to teach her to say hi. This gives her something else to do when she meets someone, so that she'll do that instead of smelling their crotch!

You have to start by teaching her to target your hand, then once you've done that you can start to teach her to target other people's hands when you say. Then when people come in, you can tell her to 'say hi' and she'll go up to them, sniff their hand, and come back to you. The ASPCA has a factsheet that tells you how to teach it here.

Edit to add: This is often used for shy dogs, which isn't the case here, but it will work because it will give her an alternative behaviour to replace the crotch-sniffing.

Indy so does this too! I've always warned people before they meet him that he will do it and to just tell him no and push him away, as Jenn said. He doesn't do it anymore! It just takes time as with any other training, and consistency.
