PostSubject: Hello there Husky community!   Hello there Husky community! EmptyWed Jun 20, 2012 11:43 pm

Well hello there! It's lovely to meet you all! I'm Jenna and I'm owned by an 8 month old Siberian Husky named Ziggy. He's quite a handful sometimes, but I wouldn't trade him for the world! I also have two kitties, Smokey and Monty (who Ziggy loves to torment unfortunately). Very Happy

This site seems to be very informative and I hope maybe I can contribute some good information as I learn from my experiences with Ziggy! Plus I think my time will be much better spent on here than scrolling down Facebook all day long, looking for something interesting haha!

A few weeks ago I found an article on this site that had information about flea and tick preventatives. It stated that using essential oils worked a lot better on one of the moderator's huskies, so I ordered some and I haven't seen a tick since I've started using them!

Anyway, its nice to meet you all; here are some pics of my babies!

I'm not sure if he is or not! The breeder called him a diluted black/white; but he looks strikingly similar to the agouti coloring as well, so I'm not quite sure!

Welcome to the forum!!! He's so handsome! I LOVE dirty face Siberians!!!! Love love love!

He has traditional white legs so I doubt hes a true agouti (agoutis would have coloring all the way down the leg - they also have cream color not the bright white). True agoutis have very little bright white markings.

All the agoutis I have seen have white legs? I don't know much about the more rarer colors' standards, but just an observation along with things such as Husky Colors showing plenty with white. Though ZIggy could still have some more of his coloring show up on his legs later down the road with how their coats change.

He's very beautiful- the dark face always makes the eyes POP! He's definitely not diluted black and white though. Agouti would be the closest thing you could classify him as, even if he has some off parts.

If you even look at that site under agouti the traditional Irish markings are lacking in the agouti - the whites arent the bright white and on many of those dogs the color extends far down the leg.

The agouti color is marketed quite a bit as a selling point for most bybs. Almost any dog with a dirty face will be called an agouti because most people don't know what the true agouti is anymore. I know a breeder with a gray/white dirty faced that everyone thought was an agouti and they didnt understand why she registered him as a gray - but he didn't have the buff undercoat or the banding.

From a breeder I know with true agoutis:

"The guard hairs only are banded. The undercoat is buff/off white. There is VERY LITTLE bright WHITE on a true agouti. Usually just feet, tail tip and possibly on the chest. Face is usually black with no white."

(I've been planning for awhile to speak with a geneticist here soon to help get further clarification on what a true agouti is just have to get around to it)

Ziggy does indeed have a decent amount of the bright white on him, so he is probably not an agouti! Thank you for the good information. I love his dirty face too Very Happy

When he was younger he had much more of a cream coloring and he had a lot of coloring on his legs, but as he's grown he has started turning more white. I suppose we'll just have to watch him grow up to be sure! Their coats change so dang much that its hard to really say for sure.

You'll have to let me know what the geneticist says about it! Ziggy was sold to us as a diluted black and white. Is there a such thing as a mix between an agouti and a diluted black and white coloring? Maybe Ziggy just kind of falls in a gray area.

Oh my goodness do you ever have to love them! I want a zillion haha. They're such a fun breed of dog; I just love that he has his own agenda and will blow me off, just like a child would, if he doesn't feel like doing something. And don't even get me started on how silly they can be! I'm absolutely in love with Sibes.

I definitely have my hands full! He's a spoiled little stinker. I wasn't aware that huskies in general liked laying on the back of the couch haha; I just assumed Ziggy did it because he saw the kitties there!

Thanks! Smile I laughed the first time I saw him there too. At first I tried kicking him off, but eventually found that he is just as stubborn as I am and he'll just do it when I'm not around.

Most black and whites are dilute (the exception being the genes that restrict dilution) the grays are also a dilution of the blacks. Reds are also diluted (reds that go from dark to light).

I believe there are 4 known alleles of agouti (fawn/sable, wild sable, black and tan and recessive black) but they also carry genes that restrict agouti expression - such as the dominant black gene - Beta-Defensin 103

So...yeah it gets pretty complicated lol.
