Eating habits driving me nuts. Empty
PostSubject: Eating habits driving me nuts.   Eating habits driving me nuts. EmptyTue Oct 02, 2012 9:16 am

First off a little bit of back round, I'd like to give as much detail as possible, lol.
I've had Lucian about a week and a half now. He was on puppy chow when I got him from the breeder. Which to begin with he was eating fine. He had the runs, and come to find out coccidia. He's still on medication for that now, has a few days left. He started not eating too much of his food, he would have a few bites, and walk away. I started changing him over to the Iams puppy food( I know, not the greatest food, but it has helped the runs big time) Once I started switching him over he would eat all his food. He was on 1/2 cup 3 times a day. After a few days he started not eating much again. I started adding warm water to his food, and he would gobble it up. He would also want more. So I put him on 2/3 of a cup. Now after a few days of him eating good, he's back to not eating much. His poops have gotten solid, and he's still on a 50/50 mix of puppy chow and Iams. I've got maybe one more meal, and then it will be 25/75 mix. I'm concerned about this because he's only a little over nine weeks old. That and I have a big issue with dogs not eating. That's the biggest cue for me when they get older that their time is coming. Happened with both my dogs. I had to put them both down within less than a year. I'm not sure what to do at this point, and he's got me really worried. I don't want him growing up on unhealthy. Any suggestions?

I forgot to add he gets boiled chicken breast as training treats. I do this 2-3 times a day with him in between meal times. He gets fed every 6 hours. 7am, 1pm, and 7pm.

Quit the chicken breast, he is holding out on his meals in hopes of chicken. Use kibble for training treats also.

for training i use charlee bear dog treats with liver. They are only 3 cals per treat so it doesn't ruin his dinner but he loves them so they must taste good and every time i go anywhere near where they're stored he is right there next to me showing off his sit and "talking"

Yes! Quit the chicken breasts! My parents dog is the exact same way. He would rather starve himself a little in hopes of getting more of that chicken.

My boy will hold out to get raw carrots while we pack our lunches, then when he has no hope of more carrots, he at last will eat!
Both of my huskies have been horrible eaters. You need to find a kibble that you can afford and that you know to be of good nutritional value and then wait until he eats it. He will not starve himself. For heavens sake, these crazy dogs will eat rotten road kill and cat poop, so I know kibble cannot taste THAT bad!!
Huskies are bred to expend LOTS of energy on very little food. They can also go for a few days without eating and really suffer no ill effects. He probably senses your concern. He's had two kibble switches in his short life, so my guess is that he's smart enough to be holding out for another. And Len's right, the yummy chicken treats are keeping him going! Wink
Good luck!

I only did the chicken breast cause I thought it would be better for him than other treats, lol. I was using ones I bought from pet smart, they were like half a calorie or something, but I ran out. He's been getting treats every time he pees or poops outside, lol. I guess I shouldn't worry so much. He ate his lunch and dinner with no problems. He just finished off his breakfast too, lol. I just worry too much I think. He's gained 2 and a half pounds since we brought him home as well. That's if my bathroom scale is accurate. I'd like to think it's not, Wink
No more chicken treats. I'll find something at my local pet store that won't spoil his appetite. He's doing very well with house training. He's learning his tricks pretty well too. He knows, sit, down, stay, come, shake, high five, speak, and kiss. Thanks for the replies!

Yukon is the opposite! I also give him boiled chicken breast as training treats along with the training treats from PetSmart, and Yukon goes crazy when it’s feeding time, and gulps his food down in 30 seconds. I had to put his food in one of those treat dispensers/puzzles so he can’t gulp it all down so fast. I also feed him ½ cup 3 times per day, 6am, 12pm, 6pm.

How much does he weigh? Yukon was about 11lbs when I brought him home at 8 weeks, and now he is 15 weeks and he has doubled in size to almost 22lbs.

I honestly wouldn't be too worried about him not eating all his food, I would be more concerned with getting him a better quality kibble.

My pups don't always eat either and they usually have very healthy appetites. Hayden will sometimes go a day or two without eating and he's perfectly normal. Nicky is obsessed with food and she will even skip a meal every now and then. When Hayden was Lucian's age I used roast beef, chicken breast, and hot dog's as training treats, so I don't think there's a problem keeping him on that. I would just cut back on the amount of treat's you're giving him.

May i ask why you are feeding Iams? My female stuck her nose up at that big time, since its primarily fillers. That may be adding to the problem.

He's about 10lbs right now. He was only 7.5lbs when I took him to the vet, so he's putting on weight. I know they vary quite a bit in weight. I'm feeding him Iams right since I've had good luck with it. It seems to be helping him a lot too, the runs are gone. His poops started getting better right after I started to switch him over. I honestly think I just worry too much, cause he's been eating fine since I made the post, lol. Go figure.
He got stung by a bee this morning too. Felt bad for him, but he seems fine. I figured it would happen sooner or later, since he likes to pounce on crickets, lol.

Iams is not the highest quality food, and you can get much bigger bang from your buck. Check out www.dogfoodadvisor.com - See where yours ranks and see what you can find that is affordable. Smile

I've been researching all kinds of foods, and I think I've decided to try Earthborn holistic puppy food for Lucian. It seems reasonably priced, and it's a five star food on dogfoodadvisor.com. Also thinking of switching my cats to the same brand of food. Hopefully I can convince hubby it's better for him, and the cats, and the price isn't all that bad, lol. I'm the stay at home mom, so all the financial stuff is up to him. It's readily available at my local pet store too.

I've also stopped the chicken breast treats, and now use a few different kinds made by Bil Jac. PBnana's, gooberlicousus, and Yapplenanas. He goes in for his next vet visit this coming Thursday, hopefully his stool sample comes back clean.

I'm heading to the pet store tomorrow to see if the have trail size bags, and give it a try with Lucian and the cats. I really wish I would have known years ago about dog foods. Stupid me, not all pet foods are created equal. Oh well, have to live and learn I guess.

Yep. Everyone makes mistakes - if I could make a suggestion, you could try Acana...That is m favorite of the kibbles and way better than Earthborn, as it is packed with Pea Protein.

Just my two cents!

Ill second the advice you've already got and add to Megan's post! I've recently switched Luka over to Acana, he loves it, we love it, its working great for him, and its more affordable than Orijen which is what we switched from because he kept turning his nose up at it!

I'm going to try the Earthborn for now, and see how he does on it. I've got a pretty strict budget to stick to, and convincing hubby to let me get the Earthborn was a bit of a pain. It's almost like being an insurance sales lady, lol. Lucian seems to like it, so I've started to switch him over.

My one cat loves it! But she's nick named fat fat kitty, so she would probably eat just about anything, lol. We'll see how my calico takes to it. I'm hoping it clears up Gypsy's semi mushy poops. The Iams worked great for the cats for a while. I'm glad I did the research on the foods. I had no idea before. I don't eat very healthy either, but if I can do better by my animals I will. I just wish I would have known sooner for my previous dogs.
