Husky scared of other dogs Empty
PostSubject: Husky scared of other dogs   Husky scared of other dogs EmptyFri Nov 09, 2012 8:39 pm

Every time I take my husky puppy out for a walk and we encounter other dogs, whether they're friendly or not he'll whimper and back out. How do I get him to be more social to other dogs? He will run up to other humans and wag his tail like no tomorrow.
He is currently 8 weeks old.

8 weeks really is too young to be taking a puppy on a walk, especially because you don't know if these other dogs have had their shots or not.

That being said, I also have a puppy and have been trying to socialize her. When we first got her, she was scared of everything. I started by taking her over to my friend's houses who I knew their dogs were up to date on shots and let her hang out with them. She got over being scared of them really quickly and wanted to play. Now when I walk her around the neighborhood, instead of hiding behind me she tries to get to the other dogs that are barking at her. But I wouldn't take her to dog parks or anything til she's had her full set of shots.

You have to realize that it has been a very strenuous couple of months for your pup. Judging by his age, he hasn't been in your home for more than a week or so. He was with all of his littermates and mother since birth, watched his littermates leave one by one, then he is taken away from his mom, thrust into some unknown world (your house), with all these weird things (you and family), and immediately introduced to other dogs of different sizes and species. Your pup is on sensory overload right now, and it will take several weeks to a month for him to fully adjust and acclimate to his new home. Patience is going to be your best friend for the next 4-6 months Wink

Thanks. We're not currently taking him to dog parks, just around the lake behind us.

Hey,

Even if you're not taking him to the dog park, if there are dogs that frequent the lake, it could still end up in a situation you don't want to find yourself in. I'd say until your pup has had their second set of shots (minimum), don't take him to places you know other dogs visit. Just my Husky scared of other dogs 2144500265

I'm with Angela. Parvo is not something you want to risk, as well as distemper. Wild animals and other dogs can transmit both. For your pup's safety, keep him as contained as possible until he's got some shots under his belt. Leash walking an 8 week old is unnecessary. Running around the house and playtime in a restricted grassy area should suffice for now. I usually recommend starting to leash train after the 3rd round of shots, and leash walking after the Rabies.
