Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.

Adopted Huksy Digging Up My Empty

So I recently adopted a 9 month old Huksy. I've built her a dog house in the back yard and take her in at night to sleep. In the house she is great, she obeys, sleeps on her dog bed, never gets into anything etc...

I take her for a 2 mile walk every morning and take her to to the dog park on Sat and Sunday and 1-2 days per week after work (I've only had her for a week now), but she is destroying my back yard. She digs, she gets into everything. I'm not so worried about her digging but she is like tearing apart some wood structures in the back that have nails in them and I'm worried she is going to get one caught in her paw or something.

I have a few toys in the back for her to play with, and when I am in the back with her she plays with them, even on her own... but when I go to work and come home he back yard is literally a mess. I don't want to leave her chained to a leash all day when I am gone but I'm thinking I might have to.

I'm very open to ideas and have money to invest in what ever needs to be done... maybe I just need to build a pen for her in the back with access to the dog house, but I would rather she have the ability to run in the back yard just not tear it to pieces!! Help!!

Have you tried keeping her in a crate in the house while gone? Digging etc is normal for a husky. If I left mine out all day, she would not be in my back yard when I got home or there would be holes dug all over.

I don't have a crate for her in the house. I rather leave her on her 30' leash. When I first got her I left her on the 30' leash when I left the house and she didn't dig into anything.

Seems like there should be a better way..

Leaving a dog outside alone with a leash has a multitude of risk factors, while crating has nearly zero. Huskies can be destructive when bored, and being in a backyard alone, to a husky, is boring, even with toys. I crate my Husky Kalle outside; it keeps him safe, my house safe, and my yard safe.

ETA- check the laws in your area a well. Some counties and states make it illegal to leash a dog in a backyard unattended because it is dangerous. Where I live here in Cali, it's illegal.
