first time blowing coat? Empty
PostSubject: first time blowing coat?   first time blowing coat? EmptySun Dec 16, 2012 1:12 am

Hey everybody, first-time husky "parent" here. Smile Our pup Patrick is 11 months old, and I've been noticing large clumps of undercoat fuzz hanging off his butt. I've brushed and brushed him with an undercoat rake, but it made him really patchy. He has a couple spots on his side where it looks really thin/shiny. Is this the dreaded blowing coat, or is he just losing some puppy fuzz? Am I brushing him out right? Is it supposed to be patchy for a while? It's only been happening for the last couple days, but we're going out of town for a couple weeks soon... Are we leaving our dogsitting friend with a fur nightmare? Does anyone recommend anything I can do to help him out, if he's blowing his coat? He's never been to a groomer and I don't know any that I would consider trustworthy. I have an undercoat rake like this one: http://www.petco.com/product/10257/JW-Pet-GripSoft-Double-Row-Undercoat-Rake.aspx And then another wire brush like this one: http://www.petco.com/product/14246/Four-Paws-Ultimate-Touch-Gentle-Slicker-Wire-Brushes.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch

Are there any other brushes I should use?

Sorry for all the questions, but I've only ever had short-coated dogs before, so the whole grooming thing is a bit new. Smile Luckily for me, Patrick loves being brushed, haha. Thanks for any help/advice you can provide!

It definitely sounds like he's blowing his coat!
As for brushes, I would highly recommend the Furminator! It works really great! Also, I know a lot of members also use high velocity blow dryers for their pups. Hopefully they can help you out a bit more with that.

Also, Welcome to the forum! wave

i pretty much do the same thing you do lol.

true that the furminator works well, but it also damages the GOOD hair on the coat as well. which is why i dont use it on my girls. used it once on yuki and she looked horrible lol. some people love it though, so to each their own.

if youre doing the undercoat rake and then the slicker and the shedding is still crazy, then i dont think theres much more you can do hahah.
although my friend who grooms at petsmart took my girls one day and "surprise groomed them" for me. she said she used furminator shampoo and conditioner which desheds them.
i never looked into it but i had never even heard of it before. but they were sooo hairless after it and really did barely shed! she also shaved their stomachs....which i was not happy about. first time blowing coat? 85993
