Vet will not neuter until 8 months Empty
PostSubject: Vet will not neuter until 8 months   Vet will not neuter until 8 months EmptyMon Apr 08, 2013 10:56 am

Question to anyone. My breeder wants my dog neutered at 7 months and my vet will not neuter until 8 months because they say there are health issues if you neuter before this time. Should I stay with my vet 7 years or go to another vet. Anyone else have this issue?
Any input would help.

I would speak with your breeder and share your vets concerns, perhaps they would be willing to accept an 8 month neuter if you pre-pay and have it booked in as proof?

Kristina good idea. I will try that with the breeder. I have a question about your 3rd dog-I think Mickey. Where did you get him or her I think him? He is unique and gorgeous!

if you want him neutered at 7 months go to another vet. We did this with our cat (not for the same reason) but because our vet was going to charge too much for our male cats neutering. We still go to the same vet, just had the procedure done elsewhere. I just got recommendations from friends on where would be a good place to take him so i could have confidence in the other vets office.

It was my understanding that it is better to spay medium to large breed female dogs before 6 months, as this is about the time they have their first heat. Females have a much higher risk of mammary cancer if not spayed before this time.
The fear of neutering before a certain age is associated with the belief that it leads to a higher risk of cancer and/or joint problems. Although, to my knowledge, there is no substantial studies to verify this. I've also heard that neutering around 6 to 7 months can be beneficial, as it tends to decreases obesity and male behavioral issues. I personally have only ever had females so I can not attest to that based on experience.
It might just be easier for you to find a different vet to perform the neuter and not mess with paying in advance or providing evidence of your intent to your breeder. Good luck!
