Hello All

I'm the proud owner of Cal, a male husky who (up until tonight) has always behaved.

I live in a home outside of Washington DC, and a friend of mine left and Cal went out with her into our yard. This has happened once or twice before but he usually goes down the steps, stops, turns and looks at me. Tonight, he peed and then took off down the street about 1/2 of a mile. I caught up to him and tried to bring him back by his collar. He got up on his back legs and with his front, clawed the HELL out of my arms... blood and all.

When we got back into the house, he ran upstairs and positioned himself under my bed in the corner. It's almost like he is scared or something, but I have no idea why... He's never done this before, anyone else have this problem or experience something similar?

Thank you,

AP

Possibly heard a noise outside that spooked him. Either that or something fast out of his periphery spooked him. Either way, I'm glad that you were able to bring him home and that he's safe!

There is a ghost in your house. Definitely that.

lol more than likely what Brooke said. Something scared him. He could have just had a bunch of energy stored up. Vegeta will go bananas when I grab his collar when he doesn't want to go. I have two sets of drawers under my bed that kind of make a little den for Vegeta and he'll go back there and hide when he knows he's in trouble (it's quite cute but very annoying, especially when it's bed time and he's passed out under there and I have to drag him out to put him in his crate). Sorry, off topic, but it could have been a million different things honestly.

My male hates it when you take him by his collar he just does not like. If and when he get loose I or my hubby always grab a leash when we go after him.

He probably got spooked by something or just does not want you to take him by his collar.

Like everybody else is saying probably got spooked. I had a similar issue just last night with Thane he didn't claw me but I needed him to go out back at 11 to do his business before bed time and something was making the weirdest noise outside in the yard and it's pitch black. He basically looked at me and went "Hell no" and if I tried to force him out he would throw a hissy fit. So I leashed him up and body guarded him as he went then he b lined it to his crate lol.

My pup (and my 2 other corgi dogs) used to hate it when I grabbed them by the collar...so what I started to do was I would periodically grab their collar but feed them treats as I was holding it. They soon began to associate grabbing of the collar and them allowing me to do so with getting treats. It comes in handy when I have to put a leash on or if Ihave to grab them in an emergency situation!!

As for the taking off, well you are getting close to what we call the teenager rebellion stage. i would up his door training and let him know he is NOT to follow anyone out the front door unless he has a leash on. we worked on that and i can leave the front door open to carry things in and they will not try to bolt out the door, granted i have been lucky a cat has not been in the area as im sure they would not stay! for the bloody arms, im sure you scared the hell out of him by grabbing his collar, you know you did it cause you did not want to lose him but to him he has no idea his life was in danger, he was out for a run. this is when safety words come in to play that he is trained to stop if you call that thing out to him, start working on that. long line leash training in a field is a good place to start. im pretty sure all our huskies have there spot to run to when scared or if they know they were bad. let them hang there till they feel safe to come back to you and hang out. welcome to our site.
