Confused Flour Beetle - Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae, Tribolium confusum

Flour Beetle Confused flour beetle. Clemson University - USDA Cooperative Extension Slide Series. Bugwood.org.

Description

The confused flour beetle and the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) are similar in appearance and habits. Adult confused flour beetles have the antennae gradually enlarged toward the tip; the antennae of the red flour beetle have the last three segments abruptly enlarged. Tribolium confusum cannot fly, but Tribolium castaneum may fly. The elongate, reddish-brown beetles are about 3-4mm long, with a distinct joint between the thorax and abdomen.

Size: About 1/8 inch (3-4mm).
Color: Reddish-brown.

Habitat

These beetles are very common pests infesting many flour mills, warehouses, and grocery stores. They also feed upon grain, beans, dried fruits, nuts, chocolate, and other foods in the house.

Life Cycle

The adult female may live for as long as two years, depositing 300 to 400 eggs. The mature larva is brownish-white, has six legs, and is up to 13mm long. The life cycle requires one to four months when temperatures are favorable.

Type of Damage

Flour beetles attack milled grain products such as flour and cereals. These beetles often hitchhike into the house in infested flour and can build up into large populations on food accumulations in cabinet cracks and crevices and in furniture.

What they heck is this? L_IMG_flour_beetle_2

Cultural Control

Control of these pests begins with the location of the infested food. A thorough clean up, using a vacuum cleaner to get into the cracks and crevices, will control this pest.
Interesting Facts

Confused flour beetles are the most abundant and injurious insect pest of flour mills in the United States

I found this guy in my closet and stayed up all night learning about different types of beetles. At first glance he looked like a roach so I was very freaked out, but I went on to learn he was a beetle. A beneficial one at that.

It's technically helpful house centipedes feed on spiders, bedbugs, termites, cockroaches, silverfish, ants, and other household arthropods.

But still. It's disgusting.

What "they" heck indeed! Love the caliper shot too, priceless. We've had the flour beetle thing before, but that house centipede offends me deeply. Wow that's an ugly bug. Another reason to love Colorado.

My 16 year old son freaks out when he sees one of those house centipedes! When we squish them, they disintegrate into practically nothing; however, the legs occassionally keep twitching even when not connected to the body! Someone needs to make a horror movie about them...

I will admit, seeing the upclose picture of it, it is kinda cool looking but from far away all you see is legs and those suckers are fast which makes them that much creepier! I get crickets in the house around summer time and my crew like to dismantle them so I'm finding legs...just their legs lying around the house.

The flour beetle and most other "food bugs" are the result of a few years back the gov-a-mint lowering the amount of pest control allowed into the foods as they are made/processed. We eat a lot of pasta products be it Italian or Asian and could no longer stock up on it when they had sales. Finally figured out how to beat the bugs. Keep it in the freezer! Like it or not your grain foods are not bug and/or egg free, affraid another good reason to cook your food.

Another bug chaser we use here is shot glasses of red pepper flakes, work like a charm for a year then replace.
