Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

Fresh caught raw fish? Empty
PostSubject: Fresh caught raw fish?   Fresh caught raw fish? EmptySat Jul 27, 2013 8:55 pm

I have a quick question that I'm pretty sure I know the answer to but I just wanted to verify before I skip out on feeding my dog an awesome snack.  Is it ok to feed my husky fresh (live), uncleaned trout straight out of clean mountain fed streams?  I just recently moved to Utah and have been doing quite a bit of fishing and I didn't want to leave him out if I don't have too.  He is on the high prairie taste of the wild food right now and very *occasionally* gets a scrap of raw meat.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure the answer to this is no, but better to know than to just skip it altogether.

It should be fine, after all it would be part of their normal diet had they not been domesticated, be sure you are doing at least annual worming if you are feeding that raw though.

You need to freeze any Salmonidae (this includes trout) for at least 24 hours in a chest freezer or 1 week in a standard refrigerator freezer to avoid salmon poisoning. Also, you risk giving him cannon butt because his stomach is not prepared for raw fish. I once gave a kibble fed dog a couple of little smelt and it gave her cannon butt for days! I felt so bad.

Don't feed it right away. You never know what was in the water source. I'd freeze it at least 2 weeks.

This reminds me of the look Shaqua gave my sister's boyfriend when he caught this huge bass...
