Hiding Bones Empty
PostSubject: Hiding Bones   Hiding Bones EmptyFri Oct 18, 2013 11:46 am

So Dizzy is kind of silly about hiding his stuff, and it cracks me up. I'm wondering if other pups do the same thing or its just a Dizzy quirk.

Whenever he has something new, or really good, he tries to hide it. Usually its under a rug, his bed, or a towel, but he'll also stash things under the couch or behind furniture. The funny part, is that its never a good enough hiding place, and he gets upset and starts to talk to himself (his frustrated talking). Sometimes, I try to help him, and put the rug/towel/pillow on top of the bone to cover it up well, and then he has to pull the covering off and pick up the bone to make sure its still there. He will then continue to attempt to hide the item in the same place! He also remembers his hiding places and will go searching for things from time to time and if he can't find it he starts doing the frustrated talking to himself. Once, he tried to hide a raw chicken bone under the couch, and I threw it away and cleaned up with an enzyme cleaner. He went back to the spot for weeks trying to find it!

Anyone else's pups do this?

PostSubject: Re: Hiding Bones   Hiding Bones EmptyFri Oct 18, 2013 11:57 am

haha yes, Kai does this all the time! She doesn't stop at bones either, she hides treats, dental chews, bully sticks, just about anything that she wants to stash away for later! She'll hide them under blankets, pillows, clothes. Sometimes if I see her struggling and becoming frustrated, I'll throw her a shirt to help her out. Also, when we move anything she has hid, she gets very upset; she's the only one who can move it haha.

I could be dead wrong about this, but it may have something to do with their history. When they were sled dogs in Russia, they had to conserve food during the winter time for later use. Kai will hide her treats, then go back at a later time when she's in the mood.

PostSubject: Re: Hiding Bones   Hiding Bones EmptyFri Oct 18, 2013 12:02 pm

Siku does this ALL the time. He does it more now than he ever did since he has to hide things from Nikolai. I'll be doing laundry and I will pull out a bone from the laundry basket and god forbid I give it back to Siku, he full on throws a temper tantrum because I wasn't supposed to know where it was. If Siku can't find a good place to hide his bone and or toy, he walks around with it in his mouth just crying because he is so mad that he can't pick one. Its crazy too, like Dizzy, weeks can go by and he knows exactly where he left his item.

Also, you cannot help him out with it, if you reach to help him with the blanket or something, he moves it and starts over else where.

Ha ha! Dizzy does what Siku does too and will wander around with it in his mouth grumbling if he can't find a good spot.

Oh! He also tries to cover it with some invisible substance by nosing the floor in a motion towards the item. I saw my first sibe cover up her poop with snow once and it was exactly the same motion. Do yours do that?

Yeah, Siku "covers" it every time too. Sometimes there is a blanket in reach and he can actually cover it, but most of the time he thinks he is, and it makes him very happy.

It is probably one of the cuttest things that Siku does, and my favorite thing to watch, because he just gets so creative with hiding spots.

Yes, Kai nudges at just air as well, which is when I will sometimes throw her a shirt or blanket lol.

I agree, it is one of the cutest things to watch. They always have to find that perfect spot. Kai also will routinely check on her hidden items. She'll do a lap where she'll check to make sure everything is till there and if anything needs to moved elsewhere. It's a riot.

Yeah, Siku checks on things to and it makes me really sad because Nikolai finds them a lot of the time and Siku works so hard to hide them and then Nikolai comes and takes them and he just cries and looks so sad. Sad

I agree, super cute! He even does it in the car if I give him something to keep him busy on a car ride.

Once, he hid one near my hubby's keyboard right before we went out for a walk. Pat moved it while we were out, and Dizzy started searching the whole place for it grumbling. He finally found it and spent quite a long time re-hiding it in a safe place. He was definitely miffed.

Bode doesn't hide things, but he definitely has "places" for his toys. He especially likes to leave his chew toys on the bed. I can't tell you how many times I've woken up to find out I slept with a dog toy all night. And he will chew it on the bed, get up and leave it there, so I toss it on the ground. He comes back and puts it back on the bed, gives me the "Mom, I left it there for a reason" look, and walk away.

And don't get me started on tennis balls. He has about 4 tennis balls scattered around the house right now. He only plays with them in the house. No interest outside. But they will roll under things and get stuck under the couch, tv stand, etc...and he gets so distraught. I will try to get him to play with another one that is already out so I don't have to crawl under things to get the other one, but he wants THAT ONE! Dogs. I don't know what I would do without him entertaining me.

It's like he's saying, "Hi bone, I love you. I'm going to softly paw you and show you how much I like playing with you. You're my best friend."

Juneau does this! I have a dog bed for her and it's very plush. She likes to hide her bully sticks there. She does the nose sweeping motion too. She'll do that for like 5 minutes, even if it didn't move lol. If she sees me touch it, she takes it out and starts whining to bury it elsewhere. Like the couch. -.-' Nothing like a hard bully stick poking you in the butt. lmao

She'll even do the nose thing if there is nothing covering it. I love watching her do it.

Omg, that is so funny! I have never thought about it that way, but now every time he does it I will not be able to get what you just said out of my head!

Kaia does this all the time when she gets something but doesn't wanna eat it right away. She'll hide it in the couch cover or in a blanket. She sometimes tries To hide it against the baseboards like she tries to use her nose and cover the bone with the rug even tho nothing is moving to cover it...she really thinks she's covering it but it's out there in plain site. She goes back and checks on it too to make sure no1 stole it lol

These videos are so funny! haha

Gus buries his bones in the couch cushions. But only when he is left out. He never hides things if we are home. I'll find a partially chewed up bully stick all slimy between the couch cushions sometimes.

Tonight I gave him a pig ear and he just couldn't find a good spot to hide it. He finally settled on a place and was air covering it when I heard an odd kind of squeaking noise. It turns out he was rubbing his nose on an extension cable while trying to 'cover' it and rubbed a bunch of hair off his nose in the process and made himself bleed! I finally just had to take the ear away and he finally settled down.

Oh my word! Sabaka does this...all of this... but only with one particular type of bone (a natural split knuckle bone, I think it is)! He LOVES going into our unfinished attic. If you ask him if he wants to go to the attic, he gets so excited and sometimes goes to find one of his "buried" bones to take with him because undoubtedly there are TONS of good hiding places up there! Other times he just runs to the door all excited because he remembers there is already a bone up there, "buried" and waiting for his return! (I guess it could just be that we so rarely visit the attic that it is still a new and exciting place, but I blame the bone "burying".)

Like some many of your pups, when he cannot find the "perfect" spot, he gets so stressed out and worked up that we often have to take the bone away because he is driving all of us crazy with his wackiness!

Hiding Bones Empty
PostSubject: Re: Hiding Bones   Hiding Bones EmptyWed Nov 13, 2013 12:39 am

This is funny, I was just telling my coworker today about my puppy who actually buries things. I always thought it was kind of a joke that dogs bury things until I got Loki.

He has no interest in burying things inside and tends to leave things laying around. Yet, I encouraged him to dig in "his garden", so maybe that is why. Now he tries to sneak bones and toys out there to hide. I usually just let him with bones and then make drop it when he wants it inside again so I clean it and give it back. He will get frustrated though and I have watched him bury the same bone and unbury it in 4 or 5 places until it is just right. Some things he steals he tries to bury too when I'm working in the yard, like my garden gloves, shovel or water bottles. This kind of has reduced since he got a little older, but I know he is still in his teenage years, so I keep a eye on it and his garden.

Bane hides his stuff all over the house. When he was little I had to make sure I shook out every piece of clothing before placing it into the washing machine since he could fit in the hamper, and hide toys there. He "air hides" all of his things as well, and in corners! The sofa cushions are common hiding places between the two of them. Willow bounces on her treats/toys before she hides them, which is quite entertaining. She also enjoys playing with her treats more so than chewing on them. She also torments Bane by simply letting her treats lie next to her. Never a dull moment in our house!
