Nervous about adopting a 2nd Husky Empty
PostSubject: Nervous about adopting a 2nd Husky   Nervous about adopting a 2nd Husky EmptySat Sep 11, 2010 8:46 pm

I have a 10 year old Husky that I have had since he was 10 weeks old. He is the greatest! Calm, quiet, loving and loyal. He absolutly loves other dogs and I really want to grant that one wish for him to have a play mate. However, I am really nervous about aquiring a 2nd one. There are only two negatives about my boy...the hair and the flight risk....which I have handled pretty well over his 10 years of life. He is a perfect dog otherwise. How much harder is it with 2 dogs? I just sent an inquiry to a rescue about a 10 year old female that seems to be just as laid back as my Dakkota. Before I go any further with my application for her, I wanted to hear from you multi dog owners. Thank you in advance for your advice.

As the owner of 3, I can testify that it can be tricky & frustrating, but oh, so much fun for us! I have actually gotten to the point where I can hardly stand the 45 minute drive after work, because I am so anxious to get home & see my Huskies! That song by Uncle Cracker, "You make me Smile" runs through my head all the time when I think about them. As they are both senior dogs, I think that after a "get to know each other" period, all should be well.... They DO love the company of others for the most part! Good luck!

I adhere strongly to the saying that "Two huskies are better than one." It was CERTAINLY true for us. As long as you can handle the financial burden, I say there really is not much of a difference and I LOVE having two dogs to cuddle Smile

AND KUDOS TO YOU for taking on a senior adoption. That warms my heart to no end!

It turns out that my Dakota is way more active than the 10 year old I was going to adopt, so for her best interest, she will not be coming home with us. I was sad, but I want her to have the right home for her. I also didn't realize how hard it would be to find an adult husky that was good with cats, so I decided to get a puppy. I have no doubts that Dakota can keep up with her. He really doesn't act his age. =-) Thank you all for your advice...I am still nervous, but I know that in the end I will be happy that I made the decision.

Good for you on making the tough decision. Adopting can be very hard for that reason. We went through 2-3 dogs before we adopted each of our own. None of the returns were our fault, but that's the way it goes sometimes (between people taking them back, etc)

Check out this thread in your breeder search and good luck! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about specific breeders or something Smile

We've been searching for about 3 months for a Husky to adopt & the search continues. We really want to rescue one in need of a good home, but as the months go on it looks like we'll have to go through a breeder. We're going to give it a few more months, just stick with it Smile

Hi!

We have a 4 1/2 year old husky girl who's our baby! She's a ball of energy and doesn't let me go to bed till 11pm (yes she's spoiled..hehe). I love her with all my heart so it doesn't really bother me, but i feel that she needs a play mate. She's a bit aggressive towards other grown dogs, but seems to be ok with puppies. We looking to get a puppy in Dec/Jan when the puppies are ready to be sold. I know that she'll do fine with the puppy. It might be hard at first, but she'll adapt. Now, my question is, should we get a male or female? People seem to think that 2 females will fight.

I wanted to get the opinion of true husky owners.

Thanks so much!

Hi Melissa, and welcome to the forum!

I don't particularly think it matters when getting a puppy whether it's a male or a female. I think it's best to have one of each as that's generally the best combination, but as a puppy the other dog should grow up knowing it's place without issue.

The most important thing when getting a puppy is to choose the right breeder. Take a look at the sticky How to Find a Reputable Breeder. A good breeder will work with you on choosing a puppy with a good temperament to match your dog's. Please please please be selective with which breeder you choose. It WILL make a difference and you won't regret it. A BYB isn't going to know enough or care which puppy they choose, not to mention the lack of a health guarantee .

Good luck! And again, welcome Smile

HI, and thank you!!! We've been searching for a puppy for a while now, but haven't had much luck. Finally, I remembered a breeder that I used to have on MySpace years ago, i was able to find him again and luckily 2 of his females just did their business at the beginning of Sept. The puppies should be ready around Dec/Jan. This man loves his dogs and you can tell that he takes good care of them. I definitely want a puppy that comes from a loving family =) Thanks for the advice and we'll most likely get a male like you said. Plus, my husband says that he needs another male in this house..lol.

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!

that is great you found the breeder, he may love his dogs and they may come from a good home but are all his dogs tested and registered? you want to make sure your dog will stay healthy its whole life and not end up with hip, eyes or other genetic issues.

Totally agreed! Once the pups are born I'm definitely going to get into more details before bringing him home. Or her...now we're not sure...i guess the puppy will pick us...like Mya did!

We've got a Husky that's a little over 1 year old, we've been training him up, playing and exercising him every day, but he's still been getting bored. So we decided to get him a little sister, figure that would be the best way to keep him from getting bored and enrich his life a little more. We're picking her up tomorrow afternoon. Have some photos here.

At the moment we're trying to figure out the best way to introduce the new puppy to Logan. Heard some different ideas about it all.

Congrats on the new puppy! Looking forward to pictures Smile

I'm not sure if you're asking for suggestions or not, but there are a couple of threads on introducing new dogs already Smile
