Puppy really aggressive when trying to take things away. HELP! Empty
PostSubject: Puppy really aggressive when trying to take things away. HELP!   Puppy really aggressive when trying to take things away. HELP! EmptySun Jun 29, 2014 9:33 pm

I have a three month old puppy who gets into a lot of things! She is always trying to get food and when we try and take it away from her or pick her up away from it she growls barks and has bitten before! This obviously cannot be tolerated. We've been lifting her slightly by her scruff and saying no firmly to remove her but this really concerns me. Any suggestions???

Every time she growls at you when you try to take something away, say no in a loud firm voice. Then pick her up and put her in a timeout area. (crate, closet, bathroom, etc.) Leave her in there for about a minute, or until she stops crying. Then take her out and let her roam around again. It's important to note that wherever you decide to put her, it should be a place with no distractions or anything for her to get at. Additionally it might have a little more effect if the room is dark, but I'm not sure on that one. Also if you can get something away from her without her protesting then you should immediately reward and praise her with a high value treat.

Her biting you could also just be a form of teething/playing. I would be cautious on using physical correction as that could lead her to fear you down the line. That being said, she should see you as the leader. So don't be afraid to do something like gently holding her mouth closed for a couple seconds if she gets too rambunctious, then telling her to sit for awhile until she calms down. Correction should be 95% verbal and only 5% physical in my opinion. Good luck and I hope I helped!

You could also teach the "leave it" and "drop it" commands. The ASPCA has good descriptions of how to teach these commands: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist/dog-behavior/teaching-your-dog-leave-it and http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist/dog-behavior/teaching-your-dog-play-tug-war

I agree with Aidan that is what i had to do with Nala shes pretty aggressive when it comes to toys and food, really anything that is "hers" but we took Nala to puppy class and she took to the "leave it" and "drop it" method really well! I do suggest those and since i see your a fellow Michigander I assume you may have a petsmart in your area, they usually have a pretty good puppy training class! Nala took 3 of them!

The problem with Mia is that I can't even grab her to remove her from the item or remove the item without the possibility of getting bit. I'm gonna try to teach her "drop it" or "leave it" and she is beginning obedience classes tomorrow night so i'm REALLY hoping they help out!!

Obedience classes will really help, both in terms of socialization and basic obedience. It's also a great way for the humans in the class to learn about training! And if Mia loves food, she'll probably learn "leave it" pretty fast. Smile

The other posters have given you some sound advice. My two cents worth is that you need these as separate commands. "Drop it" and "leave it", classes are excellent for puppies, but I don't think you will learn these early on, I may be wrong, but I believe they are a more advanced command. Playing tugs is a good way to train these 2 commands. a good example of why you need to use both commands, Miya loves Pecans, we have 2 huge trees, they are poisonous, if I see her pick one up i tell her "Miya drop it" and she does, but then she decides if she didn't pick it up she can still have it, and licks it, so then I tell her"Miya leave it" and she pouts and moves on.
Good luck to you, they are so smart, they love to learn, and they can be stubborn lil monsters.

We had and still have some issues with our Loki taking things and refusing to allow us to remove it from his mouth. He will only growl or show teeth if it is a high value bone, but otherwise he will clench his teeth down and will not let go.

We have tried working on the leave it command when he has a rawhide bone or treat in his mouth and we reward for doing so by giving him the said bone or treat back. When he would growl or attempt to bite at it, we would would wait longer to give it back, showing him that leaving it means instant gratification and reward. It has worked somewhat, and is an ongoing process. He know allows my husband to insert his fingers into his mouth and push out most items but still doesn't enjoy it at all. I would try and maybe even distract your pup from said item and give her something else that she really likes instead so you don't appear to be the taker away, just the boss who decides what she can have in her mouth and when. Smile

Let us know how things are going!

I started doing the "drop it" technique while playing tug earlier and once she realized she was getting rewarded for dropping it she didn't even want to pick up the rope again! haha. But then again she has never been aggressive with any of her toys. Only bones, people food she's gotten ahold of and other things she KNOWS she shouldn't be getting into. I'll have to keep working on it and keep treats handy for those times.

Its strange because if she grabs one of my shoes and I start walking over to her she immediately drops it, same with most other items. It's like only when she's in a certain mood. Earlier she pulled a baggy of cheezits off the end table and was extremely aggressive when I tried grabbing them from her. Same if she gets ahold of paper towel, or anything that has to be pried out of her mouth  Sad (she has a steel trap). Also it is partially on me for leaving things out, I need to puppy proof better!

lol Aidan, so true, split personalities. Sophia totally forgot about the trading game, trade what you don't want them to have for something you  do want them to have. Miya is not perfect, the only guarding she does anymore is with her bones and it's specifically towards the cat, kind of funny really, don't know what the cat would do with a knuckle bone that weighs as much as she does, but Miya thinks the kitty will steal it. On a sweet note, I have sat on the floor while Miya was eating a bone and she came over and dropped it in my lap, I guess she wanted to share with me. ahh. If it's food specific, hand feeding helps, tell your pup "be gentle" or "be nice" in a soft voice, this has made Miya less finger biting and more gentle to me. Also I have to scold my husband  for playing the take bone away game, if we have things that are "mine", respectfully, then Miya has her bones that are "hers", I hope that makes sense.
