I just wanted to give everyone on here a large thank-you. I just adopted a 4 year old lab mix, they didn't tell me until later he was a lab/husky mix but I adopted him anyway not realizing what was required of being a husky parent. I thought he'd take after the lab side, and I've had labs before and thought I was set.

Then I learned his previous parents left him tied up outside because he never 'settled' and I got a bit concerned. Brought him home and he immediately was overwhelmed by everything. But he's been getting better. Though I've only had him a couple days so I can't say for sure.

Though another problem cropped up; he barks for attention. I stop petting him and he goes nuts. Just a few days of this had me beyond the point of frustration I could handle. I was looking up everything I could handle on why he was doing this and then a lightbulb went off and I was like 'wait maybe it's the husky in him.' Found this forum and immediately my questions were starting to be answered. I read a post where someone mentioned that huskies that are under exercised get 'loud' and 'destructive'.

Having a bullmastiff I'd gotten used to owning a lazy dog that needed no exercise and was happy to just laying on the couch.

Took him for a three hour walk today and brought him home, he immediately plopped his butt on the floor and laid down. I pet him briefly and he didn't start barking at me when I stopped petting him. I'm hoping to graduate to being able to run him an hour in the morning instead of a long walk once I'm more in shape.

So just thank-you so much for saving me from crying. If this trend continues I'll gladly take him on an hour long run every morning if it gets him to sleep the day away. Hopefully this solves our problem and I can continue to learn from this forum and that any questions that crop up can be answered here.

Welcome to the forum. Glad it could be of service. In your research you probably saw the saying 'a happy husky is a tired husky', well now you know just how true the statement is.

My son has a husky mix, Archer, (and I suspect it's part lab but not sure) who spends almost half time here. He is a wirey ball of energy and is also exceedingly needy of attention. I'm in the process of training him to sit before he gets his lovin' and it does seem to settle him quite a bit. He is also a barker (not typically a husky trait though it does happen - more often they tend to "talk" to you, woo-ing in excitement, argue with you or howl - mine does all but the howling which I would love to hear but he's only howled twice in 2 years.

If the barking becomes a problem, a no-bark collar may be useful We used a no-bark collar for Archer and it has helped a bit (I say a bit because he's mostly controlled now and loose on an invisible fence so his barking now is usually just "someone's in the yard/street or there's a deer in the field. We got the collar because he was on a trolley outside at first and a cranky neighbor was calling animal control all the time at son's house.
