If I'm reading this right - and different, I think, from the way Jenn answered it, you're looking for a crate that you can use *in* the vehicle not one you can use after you arrive -- Yes?? And even if used in a vehicle, I'd think you'd want something that isn't going to leak.
Possibly a cheap plastic crate - something you don't mind getting chewed up because you're not going to have it as soon as he outgrows it? Once he's stopped growing then the metal crates are good - though my newest has bent hers some.
Beds ... I have three dogs and two cats - I've invested in dog beds, nope, the floors more comfortable. Sky (the newest mentioned above) shove the pad in the bottom of her crate out of the way, it's always in the back ... best to see if they'll use a bed before you start thinking about getting one. If you use a comforter - they might use it just because it smells like you and then not use a bed because it doesn't. (( My pups sometimes use an old flannel shirt to sleep on -- it's softer than a pad<???> ))
