Hello all,

i have recently adopted a 10month old husky "pup". It has seen 4 owners in his young years and i feel at least one of them has mistreated the dog very much which shows in extreme fear for humans, noises and doors.

I live near amsterdam, in a small house with a small yard. Not the best husky territory but i have worked as a musher for 2 years in Scandinavia so i have experience with the breed and i know i can give him a steady and regular care. Be like "an Anchor". His name is Shiro, and he's so very gentle. I do often find him very "depressed" especially for his age, he is not very expressive and playing does not come easy for him. I believe this to be because of experiences with his previous owners.

As he has been with us for only a couple of days i dedicate my entire day to him, for trust, training, walking, everything. I think i am in love.

Hi

So nice to hear he is in good hands now and he will get the love and care he needs from you. He will need to feel secure and gain your trust. Due to his past owners maybe they did not interact with him and he doesnt really know what play is or experienced this. Maybe he was just ignored or as you possibly mistreated by previous owners. Maybe the previous people didnt understand what the needs are of a siberian husky.

From my 14 years experience with my girl Laska I know that she has always wanted and needed company and we had another dog so that she would never feel left alone. He was a shepherd cross and also a very sweet boy. He passed away last May due to cancer.

They both got on so well and were best friends and inseperable. She use to play with him all the time chase him around the yard and try and jump on his back. It was quite watching.

Laska was never into retreiving balls. I use to through the ball then she would chase it grab it and then drop it lost interest immedietly. That was the end of that game. But she did like to play tug o war with toys and rip them to shreds. She loved chasing dusky into the water at the beach ofcourse we always had her on a long leash after our experience her off leash and not coming back.

Since last year Laska and I have developed even a stronger bond with her even more so. I couldnt imagine my life without her. She has a heart of gold. At her age she doesnt bolt around or play like she use to. She does sleep alot these days but she still loves her walks. Her legs are slowing but that doesnt seem to stop her.

All I can say is keep doing what you are doing with Shiro, show him love, walks and good luck with training -they can be stubborn.

All the best

Laura

Welcome and thank you for rescuing Shiro!

Is some of his behavior perhaps from not having been exposed to people much and not being socialized? Our non-abused girl is also fearful of things she was never exposed to. Hopefully having you, an experienced husky fan, work with him will build his confidence! Keep us posted and can't wait for pictures!
