PostSubject: Huskies and thunder?   Huskies and thunder? EmptyThu Mar 29, 2012 11:12 pm

My pup is experiencing his first thunderstorm (with me) and it's fascinating to watch him. I was wondering if I'd get to see him go into Flight mode, but alas, no such luck. He seems to have been kicked into overdrive. Every few seconds, he's pouncing on my lap, snatching something off the floor and playing catch with it (he throws things in the air with his head and tries to catch them), playing acrobatics with the furniture, and staring out the window in fascination. Everytime I see the sky flash, he walks back to me, but calmly. He lolls his tongue out, puts his ears back, and just sits there watching me type. What's up with this? How do your dogs act in t-storms?

My husky does nothing. But my GSD thinks the sky is falling on him. He ducks his head his ears are back his tail is low and his eyes are looking up looking for it. it's kinda funny to watch.

So far the spring thunderstorms have done nothing to affect Brewer's behavior. Still waiting for the first loud clap of thunder or lightning so close that you can hear the crackling...

Mine sleep. lol Either that or they want to be out in it! Seriously a year ago or so we were having a pretty major storm (including pea-sized hail) and the goofballs were standing out on the deck watching the sky...I had to drag their butts inside! lol

Yeah, he very clearly wants to be out there in it. I gave in to his whining and took him out back to potty and, when I finally started to come back in (which took three stern commands and a few leash tugs -- I don't want to drag him to the door by the leash Sad ), he gave in and pouted all the way to the door with his tail and ears down. Anybody who has met Fenrir in person knows that his tail almost NEVER goes down. It's corkscrewed (very Shiba/Akita-like) and only ever seems to go higher. I call it his "tigger tail," because the wonderful thing about tiggers is...

Mine ignore it, unless there is a really loud boom that startles them. Sometimes Luka thinks the thunder is someone knocking at the door and she barks. Razz

Both Juno and Bleeker are unfazed by it. Last summer they were laying out in the yard, and we had some pretty severe thunder (you could hear the crackling), and they just laid there like nothing was going on. We were on the front edge of the storm, so the wind was gusting pretty badly, and I think they really enjoyed that.

Then, when it started hailing quarter sized hail, they ran out and trid to catch it on the bounce. I thought it had to be a little uncomfortable getting pelted like that, but they really didn't want to come in.

We've only had a couple of small thunderstorms so far this season, and it seems like Alice pretty much ignores them. Our coonhound, Charlie, howls and growls and hides every time it thunders, so having a dog that's unfazed by storms is quite a new experience, ha!

The first time Willow heard thunder she jumped up from a dead sleep and looked around like WTF?? LOL! It was pretty funny! That has been her only reaction though. She pretty much ignores them. None of mine react to storms. Dakota was so laid back that once we were tent camping in a major storm that produced tornadoes and I swear it sounded like the trees around us were going to fall on top of us and he and my son slept through it all!

One of my childhood dogs was afraid of storms, fireworks, anything that made a loud noise and I felt so bad for that dog. He was an outside dog so he would run under the porch and hide there until it was over.
