About a month ago I purchased my pup Anubis from his breeder when he was almost 8 weeks. Hes about 13 weeks now and hes already potty trained...for the most part. He knows hes suppose to go to the back door and let me know he needs to go potty. But he doesn't cry or bark he just
sits or lays down at the backdoor and stares at me. I have been sleeping in my living room since I got him, I don't know how to transition him into my bedroom so I can stop sleeping on my floor. He has a crate but he climbs out of the top of it. And hes gotten used to sleeping with me...on the floor. Another thing is he was skittish and shy when I first got him. Hes no longer shy with me and follows me everywhere and hates it when I'm out of his sight. BUT he gets in these excited crazy moods where he just wants to bite the crap outta me! And HARD! I have tried everything from redirecting him to a toy, saying ouch(which made him bite harder) getting up and walking away, biting him back(only worked for a bit then it stopped working) and holding him against me to calm him down(which also no longer works, he growls and gets mad and wants to bite more!). I'm at wits end and I'm not giving up but I don't know what to do to stop him from biting!! Hes bitten my mom when she took him out to potty and she picked him...hes bitten my fiance over the same thing. I have taken him to parks, taken him to a festival with lots of people. I take him everywhere with me, hes used to a leash and collar and walking on one but hes still so skittish of other people. People go to pet him and he ducks and walks away to hide behind me. I'm taking him out and socializing him but he doesn't seem to be doing well or getting any better...I mean maybe a bit but hes not a puppy who loves everyone and wants to be petted by everyone. He also gets jealous of my fiance too. Also I have seen him tinkle on the carpet, I yell NO at him and he runs outside and finishes!? Haha hes so naughty! Also I have a travel water bowl for outings and hes offered water constantly, and hes up to date on shots and boosters he goes again on the 26th for more. Hes also already on heart-guard with flea preventative in it.

So here's a wrap up:

How do I transition him into my bedroom so I can sleep in my bed without him peeing and popping everywhere because we aren't near the back door?
How can I get him to bark and cry to let me know hes gotta go out instead of just sitting or laying at the back door while staring at me(and if I don't see him in time he pees in the apt!)?
How can I get him used to people so he will want to be loved by everyone and not be so skittish!?
How do I stop the biting!?

That's a lot of questions lol. He's gorgeous, and very young still. First what kind of crate do you have that he can get out of the top. I have Midwest Icrate there is no way anyone is getting out of the crate. So first, solve the crate issue. That crate can be placed in your bedroom so that he can see you and know he is not alone. That solves your sleeping on the floor issue. Next my Balon (4 months) growls and mouths if we pick him up, he just doesn't like it. I still do it when I have to and I just tell him no. His growl is more of a I don't like this, and he will put his mouth on you but he doesn't really bite.

Puppies do like to "explore" with their mouths. Many puppies will mouth, or nip when playing, or to show their dislike at something. I just tell Balon "no bite" and walk away, he usually gets the message. But at this age his teething is full swing so I have noticed an escalation of this mouthing, nipping. I just keep telling him no and redirect it to a toy. He plays with my lab and is constantly mouthing her too. Also use some "NILF" training with him. "Nothing in Life is free" make him sit for feedings, (assuming you have taught him to sit) I also will sit and feed Balon an entire meal piece by piece. They need to know that you are the alpha, and will constantly test this so make sure you are always alpha. He needs to know that everything good comes from you!

You can't expect complete potty training at this age, he is too young to hold it for long, make sure you are taking him out a lot, and keep using the same door, gradually he will let you know when he has to go, you could try bells, they work great for some dogs. I have actually had to limit Balon's water access because I swear he came equipped with a super soaker lol. Too much in means too much out lol. I still give him plenty of water throughout the day, but he doesn't have access to full water bowl all day long lol. Puppies normally have to go out soon after eating or drinking, waking up, and after playing.

Don't worry he is completely a normal puppy. Keep taking him with you places to continue the socialization. Have you tried a puppy kindergarten class, it may help his shyness.

good luck he is so adorable.

Howdy and Welcome.

Very cute pup and great pictures.

I think June actually covered most of it. Great info in that post.

+1 on getting a crate they can't get out of. If he's evacuating on your floors inside then crating him overnight should help a bit. Normally they won't do that where they sleep. Like June said, you could even put this crate in your room allowing you to sleep in your bed.

Generally speaking, a pup should be able to hold their bladder for an hour/month old they are. So aim on waking up every 3 hours or so to let him out from the crate and outside. You may have a couple of accidents at first but after that he should get the swing of things.

A crate should also be large enough for Anubis to stretch out in laying down, and turn around comfortably. But not large enough they can "pick" a corner to pee in. They sell full size crates with dividers you can use, and adjust as your pup gets bigger.

In terms of the "staring at the back door" we dealt with this too. Sometimes you just don't notice because of how quiet Husky pups can be. What really helped with us was introducing something that made noise into our training (in our case we taught Tika to speak on command, other members have taught theirs how to RING BELLS). Once they get this down and can do it when ever you want them to, you transition that training into being allowed to go out.

When you notice him by the door call him over to you and ask "Do you need to pee?" "Anubis pee?" and make the hand signal you used for your noise or action. There will be some confusion at first, as you are using the hand signal of the other command but not the same word, but as soon as they do the action (ring the bell, speak, dance, nose you) get up praise and let them out. Soon Anubis will learn the connection between the two and do it without being prompted.

With enough training and recognition of the word"Pee" it may even get to the point they will pee on command, provided they have to.

I think your fine on this one. He's young still. Some pups take a little bit of time to come out of their "shell" so to speak and in general most Huskies are extremely and overly loving of everyone.

Sounds like your doing this right to me... Take Anubis around people you trust and shower him with play and praise. It should desensitize him a bit and show him he can trust people. For the time being however if he is that skittish I wouldn't overload him with people like at festivals and such.

Give this one a bit more time but try and include as many GOOD ROLE MODELS in your pups life as you can so he can see people just want to make him happy.

How do I stop the biting!?

Again like June said your around the teething phase, Either way Huskies are mouthy dogs when they are young so Good luck.

Honestly it sounds like you changing around alot because your not getting instant results. Pick the way that works for you and Anubis the best and stick with it. Nothing we can tell you will change anything he does over night. It's all about patience and consistency.

It will get worse before it gets better, and in my experience the one that is affecting your pup the most is the one they "flip out" over the most... You just need to out stubborn them and get the point across that when he bites you everything fun is stopping. Be it a nose grab and a NO, a time out, force a gag reflex by sticking your fingers in a bit further, walking away, or screaming OUCH! and stopping.... Just pick the one your most comfortable with, and in the end you should notice results.

There is also the chance that they are mouthing so much because their teeth are hurting. If you believe Anubis is in this phase there are 2 dirt cheap things you can give him to numb his teeth a bit.

Ice cubes : We used these as treats around her teething phase and she still sits by the kitchen when ever she hears the ice trays come out. She loves them.

Chew rag: Take an old CLEAN rag (we used old face cloths), and drench it in water. Kinda roll it up a bit and place it in your freezer. Take them out and give them to Anubis to chew on once firm.

Remember everything we suggest will not be an overnight fix. You need to work and work and work at it. Patience, consistency, stimulation, and love is the key for this stage of their life. Keep at it and you should notice results.

Best of luck and I hope it helps. Welcome to the fun of having a puppy Razz
