PostSubject: Snow is acting weird - VET UPDATE!   Snow is acting weird - VET UPDATE! EmptyWed Jul 18, 2012 1:26 pm

If it's not one thing... it's something else. Today Snow went to the vet for regular shots. She whined when the vet touched her back leg. Last night I heard her bothering the cat and Snow yelped pretty loud and ran out of the kitchen. She didn't want to come out of her kennel and when she did she immediately lied down on my daughter's lap. She wasn't her normal hyper self. She was mellow at the vets and she wouldn't jump in or out of the car or on the couch. She's lying on her bed and won't eat. I'm assuming she is sore from a bite by the cat but I can't touch it to look and see. Is this normal for being bitten by a cat?

maybe she is a little traumatized from the shots and the bite? Is she limping?

Keep an eye on her. Was she like this before the shots? Cause sometimes dogs can have reactions to shots. Was she given lepto?

Yes she was like this before we left Sad I noticed a small limp I think when she was walking back into the house. She's never acted odd during shots. And no I don't think she was given lepto.

Cato had a negative reaction to Lepto. Robyn, how's her face? Any swelling? I would assume a combination of the bite and the vaccinations. That can be a lot on a little pup.

If you see any swell, you may want to give her Benadryl. Call your vet for exact dosing. I know what my two can have, but Snow may be smaller. Cato @ Delilah can both have 25 mg. of it at 35 - 40 lbs.

Just watch her. I'm sure its just stress from the vaccines and probably a bit of pain from the bite. If you can get the chance to look at it, just clean it out.

shes probably most likely shocked from the cat plus the shots. Shadow was kinda like that with one of our 3 cats. She didnt bite him but she sure smacked the s*** out of him like 5 times in a milisecond before I grabbed him. He went off on his own for awhile in a corner of the living room, I just kept my eye on him. Prolly dizzy from all the smacking Very Happy

She was acting like this before we went and wouldn't jump into the car like normal. Everything was just off so I don't think it was the shots but they might have made her a little more stressed. I'm going to let her rest and make some lunch and then I'll take (or try) a look at her leg. I'm not real sure where she was bit so I'm scared she'll bite me if I have to search for it. *sigh* My poor baby... I have never seen her do this before Sad

On a humorous note... the kids think she's "cured" of her puppy crazies. LoL... I told them she just doesn't feel good but they seem to favor this behavior more. Not mommy though... makes me worry pale

But after he bit her, she was her normal self up until bedtime and then she slept in her crate :/

I would hold her down. Crap there's a good way to do it and hold a dog down with your legs, but I'd need to show you in person! grrrr... Anyway, I would definitely look at her leg and make sure the bite wasn't too serious.

Did you have the vet try to look at her bite?

Well, my worry is that Cat bites can get infected fast and it can be bad. She might have an infection starting (don't quote me though, its just a thought) and it is causing her pain. If you can see it Clean it out, put a little gauze on and bandage it so she can't lick it.

She absolutely won't let me touch it and I don't feel comfortable trying without someone to hold her so she doesn't bite me :/

She just stood up and it looks like she won't put weight on the back right leg. I tried to video it but you can't tell... although what she is doing in the video is weird in itself.

SHe's getting comfortable in the bed, Cato does this. It looks like she is definitely limping. Just wait for the hubs to get home and have him help you take a look at it.

For any bites, we spray the dogs with Vetericyn - it kills a multitude of germs including MRSA.

In other news, you'll need to get comfortable holding her down. Emergencies happen all the time and you're the first responder. I hate seeing blood and gore but I've forced myself to patch up the dogs when necessary (while saying "ew, gross!" the entire time...). Start with holding her in your lap petting her, letting her eat treats out of your hand. Also purchase a soft muzzle or use the sticky vet tape - that stuff that they put on your arm when you give blood (there's no glue on it, it just sticks to itself). It's available at Petsmart/Petco and can be used to make a soft temp muzzle. I also keep a roll in the car just in case. Even dogs comfortable with you may bite when they have an injury. Good luck! Smile

I'm going to have my husband help me look when he gets home. I can handle blood and ooze but not so much her biting me. Not when it can be done with help and less stress on her. She got up to go to the door to potty.. then came back in and lied down on her bed again. Hasn't moved. She's def. not putting weight on it but not completely limping either :/ I hate this for her. Dexter is getting a spanking.

So she's still just laying around. Would just a simple cat bite cause her to just want to lay down all day? She's been up twice to go to the door to potty and that's it. Still won't eat. I see something on her leg and looks like maybe a tiny bit of blood where the bite is but that's all she'll let me do Sad I'm so worried. I called the vet and got the answering machine so I left a message.

Do you even know if it's a bite? When my dogs are running around sometimes they'll slip or smack something while running and limp for a while. You really do need to get a look at the leg... Without seeing it you can't even begin to speculate what happened.

Just watched the video. She looks out of it from the shots. Is she walking like that still? She looks very unstable.

Yes I know it was a cat bite. I heard it happened and saw her. I can see where it is on her leg now but I can't examine it thoroughly because she snaps her head back at me because it hurts. She's always in my view so I know she didn't fall. She has never acted out of it from shots. That's how she was acting before we went. Not turning in circles like that but I think that was her trying to get comfy like Megan said. The only time she walks is to the door and out to potty. I have a video of her outside so I'll get that posted. But this last time I had to pick her up because she seemed like she didn't want to go up the steps.

ETA:

Also to add... this is what I see... There's two different bite marks from what I see.

Hmm - Yeah, those are bites. Honestly, Cato has gotten a few bites from the cats, but nothing like this ensued. I truly think it's an adverse reaction to the shots on top of the bite. Cato didn't eat for 24 hours after shots (which is insane because he's a piggy) and just slept.

Give it a little time and just watch her.

Is she drinking water?

Yep she is drinking now... ate a little bit and is a little more active. Wow. I did not realize that shots could do that to a pup. Sorry guys Sad I just got really nervous. Thank you for the reassurance!

Don't apologize.

Shots are really hard on their bodies.. Honestly, I have been considering breaking the law and not even getting their rabies, since my state won't accept titers.

We don't vaccinate the cats either. Everyone has had their first set of shots and that's all they will be given (except rabies, which I am on the fence about.)

Thankfully, I have a vet who actually supports my decision with Delilah, simply because she is so allergy prone.

yes those bites can make her leg sore for sure! Were the shots given in the same general area? (btw the circling is normal trying to get comfortable action, they all do it).

Were you able to wash out the bites at all?

Watch her and call your vet in the am if she is not better!
