Swimming pool? Empty
PostSubject: Swimming pool?   Swimming pool? EmptyMon Jul 22, 2013 11:22 am

Oakley loves the water! Since its summer time here in Kansas where the temps are getting up to 100+ with heat index its hard to exercise the dogs. Even when we go to the dog park at night time when the sun is almost completely down its still just to hot and humid. We have a lake and creeks around my area but 1. I would have to keep him on a leash 2. During this time of year is when the lakes usually start shutting down due to algae. Sad even though there hasn't been any reports I still do not trust the water to be safe for them. My daughter has a friend with a pool at her house, has privacy fence and its in ground pool. She is thinking about starting to take him over there and have some and get good exercise in for him. Does anybody have any suggestions on that? I know she wont leave him alone and will make sure to rinse him off really good afterwards and to make sure he has clean and fresh water for him to drink and not let him drink the pool water.

Thanks

My boyfriends parents have a pool that has a fully fenced in area and we take them over there all the time. They love it and have so much fun. I suggest bringing a toy that they love that is some what waterproof, cause then they can can go in and out of the pool, and get a lot of exercise that way. Cause mine go there and end up running around the yard more than in the actual pool, so the toy keeps them entertained and swimming.

Definitely rinse them off well like you stated cause the chlorine isn't great for the skin, but we haven't had any problems with it so far!

I will tell her about the toy thing! even though he loves his toys, when around other dogs all he wants to do is play with them lol But he loves the water so he might take the pool over the other dog. He will probably be a little confused at first since he's never been swimming. But hopefully once he sees my daughter in the water he will just dive right in after her. Thanks for the advice!

Does he play fetch? One friend got her dog to go swimming by playing fetch on the stairs of the pool then the toy went farther in then it was come in and get me syle play next thing they knew the dog went in on own. Then they had one that never liked to go in (unless carried) and another who went in all on his own no toy or anything just in on own.

Shaqua likes water but won't get in the pool unless I put her in there. Ha ha! We have a salt water pool and she is good about not drinking it, but she also will NOT go swimming unless I pull her in. I do laps and her and the puppy we are now watching, Penny, will run on either side of the pool following me. If I go to pick Shaqua up to put her in the pool she lays flat on the ground.

I'm not sure why.... she loves getting in water. She digs in her water buckets, she jumps in creeks and walks around on the edge of ponds but a pool scares her. Let me know how your husky takes to it!

Nicole are the creeks shallow enough that Shaqua can stand all of the time?
Becuase if so that may be the issue with the pool can't stand in the water ain't gonna do it. Never know?

My only suggestion is to brush him off real good first (the hair is havoc on the filter), show him where the stairs are, and rinse him off after. Growing up in Florida, pools were the only place I would swim my dogs due to my alligator and algae paranoia.

Oakley only plays fetch at home, Sometimes he will play at the dog park. When he is at the park he will chase it and then sees other dogs and takes off to go play. My daughter plans on taking him Thursday, I will let everyone know how he does. We live in northeast Kansas the hometown for Kansas State University! We have been brushing Oakley and Timber everyday since pass month! They are blowing their coats like crazy lol Oakley has that fine hair and Timber was loosing his hair in clumps but I manage to get that under control.

Well let us know when you plan on coming to town and we can meet up at the dog park and let the babies play! More huskies the better! its really neat to see the huskies play with or without each other. They always run in sync with each other and they always approach other dogs by surrounding them like a pack haha but not aggressively they don't attack the other dogs they play. There is dog park not to far from the stadium if you know where cico is at? where they usually have the fair and the rodeo. Yeah we bleed purple that's for sure. My husband and I don't usually go to the games we stay home and watch it. Better view of the game and the dogs aren't home alone. Smile Here is picture of Oakley for the beginning of last season. My daughter took him down to the purple power play and said she heard some girls ask if they can pet her dog and she turned around there was all the girls from kstate basketball team lol
