Ok So everyone by now knows I have a 18 month old female Choc Lab Ruby, and 1 year old Male Sibe Balon. My question is that it I were to add another dog to my pack should it be female or male. History---Ruby lab is pretty submissive and Balon is alpha because she lets him be lol. He does like to remind her he is sometimes lol. Do two male huskies get along ok? Or should it be a female I add. I am not sure whether it will be another husky, or mutt, or whatever, But if it were to be husky just need advice on whether a female would be better. Thanks!

The whole female/male distinction is a bit of a myth. I've met some incredibly submissive males and some very head-strong females. I would go into the process with an open mind and just make sure your next dog meets your pack first. Every dog is different, so there's really no set rule Smile

Moral of the story-- find a dog that fits in your pack. Personality is the key, not gender Smile

Good luck! And enjoy the process!

Are you thinking about getting a rescue or a puppy.. I agree with Tori the current pack needs to meet the new dog. I think the dog needs tp choose you and your current pack would be the best thing to do.

More then likely this will be a puppy, not sure if by breeder or rescue yet.

The girl/boy submissive/dominant stereotype doesn't exist in dogs.
In fact, I've found that two girls are more likely to clash than two boys, and that typically the boy is getting beaten up by the girl for being an overzealous annoying male dog.
I personally only own girl dogs because I have unaltered females and don't need that drama.

I think girl and girl is more of an issue, especially in Siberians. My female is super dominant, hence why I have 2 males, and soon adding a 3rd male. My boys all get along perfect.

I agree with Jennet. We have two males an they get along great. Neither try to be dominant over the other.

Just FYI, I wasn't referring to Male dominance as "that drama" that I don't need. I meant males pining over in-season females..

Females CAN totally get along just as well as males. Mine all do great with each other.

It really depends on the male and if they are to be intact or neutered. Denali (intact) is great with our neutered males, and of course he is good with the ladies, but he is male dominant with other intact males. It gets especially worse if any of the girls are in season or I've also seen if there is an active breeding male they cannot be with another intact male at all. The key is knowing your dog's personality and deciding which would be the best for your pack. If you are rescuing, many rescues will allow an introduction to see if they are going to be able to fit in with the existing pack or not.

Thanks everyone. Now, I have heard that Males are more affectionate, Balon is such a cuddler! (All my dogs are neutered/spayed asap).

I have to agree with Tori... whether it's a male or a female doesn't matter. There are males that get along with other males, and females that get along with other females. Or, they could just not get along at all and make you want to pull your hair out at times. Smile

The best thing to do would be to take both Ruby and Balon with you when you meet the pups and they should be able to tell you which ones they'd get along with. Don't rush too fast either, you may even come across a littler or two where they don't get along with the pups. Just take your time and make sure you've received the OK from Balon and Ruby with the pup you end up with. Smile

Good luck!!
