The cake turned out beautiful Val! The cupcakes are really cute too. I've seen rose cupcakes, but haven't tried to do any yet, but would love to in the future. Hopefully they will turn out half as good as yours. My hand is a bit unsteady

Those are all delicious looking! And I think your buttercream roses look great Val, as well as the cake for Isabella. I dabble in cake decorating every now and again, I have an airbrush that I have food safe paints for this is my latest creation for my boyfriend for his birthday. I used marshmallow fondant cause its easy to make and doesn't taste that bad and easier to airbrush

I don't decorate cakes often because while it's enjoyable I find it super frustrating

Val the Cupcakes roses look great. I always found roses frustrating.I could never do them on the nail and did ok a wooden stick. Everyone is so talent. Airbrushing is something I want to get into but just haven't taken the dive. Here is some example of what I do from a few years back

Anyone have a tried and true sugar cookie recipe? preferably something that holds its shape well?

This one always works out well for me. I adjust to my own tastes (omit lemon zest and add more vanilla extract) I like thick sugar cookies and these are just the right amount of sweetness to me, that I can eat the plain and be totally content

being in high altitude (CO), i cant offer any suggestions as everything bakes diff for me then they did when i was in PA... sucks. love a good sugar cookie, i have made some in the past have like 3 diff ones to use.
