First off....i was duped on my puppy. The owners said he was AKC registered but cant find the papers. We have realized he never was. So do you think he looks purebred or mix? And also....any info on the NKC? Have friends who have dogs registered there and love it.  two questions lol 20140409_155423_zps4276db6d

NKC is probably along the same lines as CKC, in that they're generally used by backyard breeders who can't prove the lineage of their dogs. Ghost is CKC registered because the BYB we went to didn't know the mom's lineage, so theoretically she could be something other than purebred Sibe. Your little guy looks purebred to me though, and he's adorable Smile

What branch of the military were you? I'm active Navy.

For what it's worth, we didn't register our pup with the AKC. We could have, but he'll never be a show/breeding dog, so we opted not to. Smile

I only know it because the Navy banished me to Air Force bases for years. I did my master's at AFIT, advanced flight training at Vance AFB, and was stationed at Tinker AFB for almost 4 years. It's nice to be back in Navy land Wink

Thats funny because i was at TINKER in 03 - 05 VQ3. My thing with AKC is this. I have done a ton of research on all the registries out there. Some are for the money and others seem to at least try. ACA and NKC and UKC. Those are just my findings. People who defend the AKC in stating it is the best because its is the oldest and it states your dog is purebred and others are shams make me laugh. I completely agree that AKC is the most respected because of its legacy and dedication to keeping purebreds in and keeping track of the lineage. What I don't get are the people who say for instance the ACA and NKC are scam registries because it needs a vets approval of purebred status and two photos and Bam they are registered. How did the AKC start??? I am sure a licensed Vet had to inspect the dogs in order to confirm it is at least 95% purebred or higher. The UKC, another reputable registry by many, recognizes the NKC with certain breeds. Is the UKC junk because they support a so called Scam registry. Anyway thats my tangent lol.

That's funny! I was in VQ-3 from 08-11. Nice to see another Ironman here  Cool

To be quite honest, I'm really not caught up with papers because I have no desire to breed or show. I get where you're coming from though. AKC is definitely the most well known, and UKC is decent from what I've heard. I really don't know much about NKC, so I can't really say much on them. CKC I'd shy away from though.

IMO, papers aren't as important as the health of the dogs and the quality of breeding stock. Make sure your breeders are doing all the health checks (like hips and eyes), and that they're breeding to better the breed instead of breeding for things like eye color or coat length. That's just my take on it, and my opinions have been very strongly affected because I have a dog with severe neurological issues due to indiscriminate breeding. I'm not anti breeder, but I'm extraordinarily picky on who I'd go to.

I miss it sometimes lol.

I have done all of the checks for my pup, and have people we know who have been breeding for years so if it was something I wanted to do, as well as shows, I have the resources. They told me also that the papers are way over looked and people makes statements like, those other registries have lower quality dogs thats why AKC didn't take them. And in the same paragraph state, AKC doesn't guarantee quality. Lol really?

Yeah that's just a bunch of talk. AKC doesn't take dogs if their lineages can't be proven, because there's no way at that point to guarantee purity. There are some really shady people out there who are breeding "Merle Huskies", which are really mixes. The picky registries make sure that mixes like that can't be passed off as pure.

I miss flying, I miss a lot of the people, but I don't miss a lot of the bs in the community. I guess the guys who were JO's with you are the ones who are coming back as skippers now. Stoddard, Hancock, Russell, Fields, Thomas, Summers, Jessup, Snode, and Sniffin are either there on command tours or getting ready to rotate in. They were all department heads when I was a JO. Tick McCabe just got picked up to be the next deputy commodore too, he was a phenomenal XO and then skipper while I was there. Not many officers out there finer than Tick Smile

not sure if anyone knows about the ACA, but it seems to be pretty legit. I was reading the requirements for registration and it states.

Q. How can I register a dog that has no papers?

A. Dogs that do not have papers cannot be registered with the ACA because we are a pure-breed only registry and require documented lineage. However, dogs that do not have documented lineage can be registered with the International Canine Association (ICA) at www.icapets.com

What do you think? I called and they said that they need a 3 4 or 5 gen pedigree in order to register with them.
