Swimming in the water bowl Empty
PostSubject: Swimming in the water bowl   Swimming in the water bowl EmptySun Dec 28, 2014 6:02 pm

My puppy wants to lay in his water dish all the time. When he's not laying in it he's scratching at it which dumps/splashes the water all over the hard wood floors. While it's super cute I'm worried my floors are going to get ruined. Any suggestions?

Try raising the water dish off the floor.

Mine used to do this when he was younger. I read online to put a rock in the bowl- but being that Rig thought everything was a toy at the time, I figured it would just encourage the behavior more. So, I put a small amount of water in his bowl and everytime he drank out of it but didn't try to play, I praised him. If he tried to dig in the bowl, I told him no and removed him from it- he caught on very quickly and no longer has the issue.

Ava used to do that when she was a pup - and she still does if she's feeling really frisky. Inside, we use a huge, heavy water bowl that she can't tip over and she gets scolded whenever she digs in the water. Outside, she has a kiddie pool that she's encouraged to dig and play in. It works well for us =]

This post made me smile, because it brought back so many memories. We had one of those Drinkwell fountains that kept refilling. The more he splashed and dug, the more water kept coming! It was SO much fun getting mommy's floor soaking wet and ruining the hardwood floors then plopping his fuzzy butt right down in it. Mine did this ALL the time and it was so adorable, but it can be a pain to clean up.

1. Limit the amount of water you keep in the bowl, leave only enough for puppy to drink. I removed the fountain and bought a normal bowl.
2. Keep a big thick towel, folded over under the bowl.
3. Keep a mop handy.
4. Fill a bowl/pool of water outside, so he can splash out there and figures out that outside is a place to play in water.

This is my little man digging in his bowl Smile

So stinkin cute!!!! I was kinda wondering if Zeus did this because he was hot. He will take a drink then step both front paws dig a little then back paws.. splash splash until the floor is soaked then plop down in the middle of the puddle.. Or he will just try to climb into the bowl and fall asleep. The other pup Atlas doesnt do this at all.. lol Silly pup I love you I do plan on getting them a kitty pool but thought it may be a little to cold right now.

You may just have a husky that loves water. Mine started doing this in the winter as well and as soon as Spring came, we took a trip to our family's farm in the mountains and turned them loose at the pond and they just dove in like duck's! I believe they think they are Labs instead of Huskies lol.
