HELP PLEASE! Bad behaviour. Empty
PostSubject: HELP PLEASE! Bad behaviour.    HELP PLEASE! Bad behaviour. EmptyTue Jun 05, 2018 6:19 am

Hello!
So, I am in dire need of help. At this point I’m hopeless.
My husky puppy of three months is impossible.
I’ve had other dogs before, all perfectly trained without puppy school, all by myself. But this is my first husky, and I’ve tried countless methods and still don’t seem to be succeeding in anything.
The first problem I have is that she will not learn to pee outside, she lives without a bother and will even pee near her food (Speaking of that, she will eat whatever she wants to eat at the moment, otherwise she will starve. High quality kibble she will not even look at, cooked meat only sometimes and specific types of raw meat. I’m afraid she’s too little to just let her not eat until she’s too hungry to refure what I give her...), I will take her out every 30 minutes to an hour, and immediately after eating and sleeping, but most of the time I am just not fast enough, even though I am there in a second. I believe this may be marking behaviour? This has been going on for a month, I of course praise her when she goes outside, I even gave her treats when she was smaller, now she won’t even come near a treat or any packaged dog edible. Imm probably the one at fault here by using an amoniac cleaner, although I am still waiting for the enzyme cleaners to arrive, so things might go better when I can use those. I’m also suspecting a urinary tract infection so I am taking her to the vet today, because she pees an abnormal amount, and by that I mean a good 7 times in 40 minutes.
My second problem is that she has tantrums at night, even though I walk and let her run to her heart’s content in a big, closed off, secure place. Throwing the ball, running by my side... This goes on for two or more hours before bed and yet whenever we come home she will start barking by the door (Which I do my best to surpress because my neighbours are awful people, ready to call the police on me for this. I also know that this might be too much for a small puppy, and I tried giving her less and playing at home instead, but it just seems she needs all this running. I do keep her fully occupied by playing with her practically during the whole day when it’s too hot to go outside, so I can be certain it’s not boredom) she won’t sleep and just throws a general nightmare tantrum. I let my mom try to handle the situation one night and she came back in tears, not being able to get her home, and with a bloody, bitten finger (not on purpose, she is teething currently).
I definitely am able to calm her more and she will listen to me more, although I would like her to listen to the rest of the family and be generally obedient, but I am trying very hard and making no progress. I am in no way using an agressive or physical method with her and I never would.
I may just be an idiot when it comes to training huskies, please tell me so if I am, maybe she would be better off with someone who can handle her better. I don’t know if she’s really an impossible dog or others have had this problem? I would never want to give up on her, but I’m not sure if I can live with her if she doesn’t cooperate with me in training for the next 15 years. If there’s a way I could train her with effect, I am ready to put in the effort. But if I cannot, I want to do the best for her and give her to someone who can work with her and give her an excellent life, no matter how much I may love her and wouldn’t want to lose her.
I apologize if this is elaborate, I’m just mentally exhaused and in a state of hopeless despair, and I thank you in regards.

I would start with a good check over. Make sure she doesn't have a UTI or any other medical issue. Peeing a lot and frequently is definitely a sign and if she isn't eating correctly they should do a fecal to make sure she doesn't have something that is upsetting her stomach causing her pickiness. Huskies can definitely be picky and bratty but pups shouldn't be starved out as they need balanced nutrition in a big way while they are growing. Rule out that there isn't a medical reason why she doesn't eat normally.

How much does she eat daily? How do her poops look and how often does she do it? When she does eat what is it normally?

As for behavior, at 3 months she shouldn't be marking yet. Once the UTI is ruled out it will be easier to know where to go from there. I assume you got her from a breeder. What were the conditions like? Puppy mill dogs are extremely hard to house break because they were brought up in horrible conditions where they had no choice but to defficate near their food and water so become desensitized to the act. Take her out every half hour as you had been and when she goes pee or poop praise and then continue to let her play. Don't bring her in right after she goes potty. This can cause some dogs to associate going outside with the end of fun and so they will hold it while they are outside until they can't hold it anymore just so they can continue to play outside.

What does exercise look like? At 3 months you can walk her on grass for 15 minute walks at a time if you have finished out her shots. Huskies need a lot of exercise. Rule is 5 minutes per month of age of walking on soft surfaces at a time. This can be done multiple times a day according to her energy level. If you don't tire them out they will be brats that never sleep and in general get into everything that they shouldn't. Tiring out isn't just physical though, it's mental too. What does her training schedule look like? For me it's easier to take them for a walk to get some of the over excitement out of the way and then go into the mental training. If she won't take treats you may look into clicker training. Look through this thread. It has a lot of positive reinforcement training methods and goes into the Nothing In Life Is Free method of training. Sounds like she needs a full blown crack down. Make her earn everything. Hand feed. Make her do tricks for the food that she will eat. Make her wait and earn whatever it is that she is having a tantrum over.

Which by the way, what does she usually have a tantrum over? Is she crate trained?

Yup! Thank you. We went to the vet and got antibiotics. The enzyne cleaners came and she only had two accidents since then, everything’s going smoothly! She is eating normally now, part raw and part dehydrated BARF, and I monitor her intake, I guess her appetite was low for two days, but I’m beyond glad she got it back. I play contantly with her and take her into a grass court type of thing that is closed off, so she has no way to run off. She plays with me there and runs around for a bit and I train after she got some of the energy out. She is very obedient and we have come very far, I’m quite proud! I seriously don’t know what had been happening with the past week and why she was so disobedient, but everything seemed to do a complete positive overturn. Her tantrums were being thrown because she wanted my attention until she fell asleep at night, I had no problem to that, but now she seems to sleep on her own again. I didn’t crate train her yet because I haven’t done so with any of my past dogs and never had any problems, but I am definitely still making a decision of wether I should do it with her. Although, in everything positive so far, there has been a stressful moment. Maybe it’s not approporiate for this tread, but I feel I need to ask if something similar ever happened to anyone else? I was just harrased by an old, drunk man, saying that my positive reinforcement training system is bad, that dogs don’t need feelings (Yes. On quote.) but strictness and a master, he told me I’m too young to have her and that he has two lab-retriever mixes and he knows better. When she playfully jumped on him slightly (We are working on that, but she is three months old and still playful, for god’s sake), he hit her on the head, after which I was left in shock and immediately tried to leave and politely asked him if he could not touch my dog and get away from us, but he wouldn’t let me leave. He proceeded to tell me how I couldn’t meet her exercise standards (I’m a hiker and generally a highly active person who spends most of the day outside...), and that she dominates me. I was almost in tears when I finally managed to leave somehow, and broke out into tears. I know I shouldn’t listen to those kinds of things, but this really irritated and got to me... Anyways, thank you a ton for your help!

I'm glad that everything is shaping up for you.

On the other topic, some people just shouldn't be allowed out of their cages! Huskies are definitely not labs and trying to treat one as a lab is going to be catastrophic! In your case, I wouldn't have wasted the time in trying to be polite. In the first place he was drunk and in the first place he doesn't know what he's talking about and if you hit my dog one more time I'm real apt to hit you!

What a jerk. I've had people try to tell me I should shave my dogs (which is a HUGE no-no) but I've never had someone tell me I wasn't cut out for owning a Siberian, much less 2 and a mutt, or that my training was wrong. My dogs more than prove themselves that their training has worked just fine. There are a lot of old tactics still alive and well out there that are outdated thinking and the Dog Whisperer hasn't necessarily helped those old tactics to die out. They don't know anything about owning huskies. And the ones that say they used to have one more than likely never did anything with theirs and that's why they have this illusion that they are horrible dogs that can't be trained. You're doing fine and your pup is going to turn out awesome and have a great life with you. Ignore the haters and just roll your eyes at them and walk away if you need to. He didn't care if he was hurting your feelings. You don't need to care about being rude to get away from that kind of idiotic behavior.

How horrible!  Reminds me of my neighbor - we were standing and chatting at the corner, a passing dog was barking and lunging at Rumo, and he said, "She should not keep letting her dog do that. If it were my dog, he'd have all four paws hanging off the ground by now."(!!?!)  And for the record, I do think dogs are complex social animals who feel pain and have emotional states...and they will 'act out' if they are abused. Although they actually tolerate a lot more from humans than they should.

Anyway, good that your youngster is eating and sleeping better! Maybe it was a UTI making her uncomfortable, so she was being really clingy and couldn't sleep well (I've had UTIs...let me tell you...it is hard to sleep, and very uncomfortable because you feel like you need to go all the time, and then it burns when you do go...) For me, antibiotics made me feel a lot better within 48 hours. However I'm a human and not a dog. :-)

Thank you everyone! The guy is defintely an idiot, I am sure he doesn’t know anything about huskies. And yes! Dogs definitely tolerate more than they should from humans. My pup is doing great now with a positive training system, and I feel sad for his dogs, I’m sure there was hitting involved and that’s just too sad. But yes, everything has gotten even calmer since the UTI antibiotics and while there are still a few incidents left, she’s doing better, though most importantly I can see she feels better and is more comfortable. As for eating, she seems most comfortable with a raw diet, she won’t accept kibble and as she grows rejects cooked meat as well, so raw meat with some veggies and fruits is what we’re sticking with! It’s best for her so I agree, though I did let her try different foods to see what she’d like best, and this seems to be her choice.
