PostSubject: My senior husky is not blowing her summer coat and not growing her winter one   My senior husky is not blowing her summer coat and not growing her winter one EmptyThu Dec 14, 2017 2:28 pm

I am new to any forum. I have an 11 1/2 year old female purebred Siberian husky. She was diagnosed with diabetes this summer. Her hair has not grown back where they shaved her (between her shoulder blades) to get me comfortable with giving her shots. She has not blown her summer coat nor has she grown her winter coat. We live in CT and, while it was a mild winter, it was not that mild. We are now getting the cold weather (2 snowfalls) and she can't enjoy it because she gets cold. Has anyone ever had this happen???? My poor puppy can't enjoy her favorite time of the year and I am very concerned...

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

i have a senior pup and she just always seems to be losing her fur but she does regrow. i wonder if the shots have anything to do with it? have you talked to your vet? maybe the doses can be adjusted?

what food are you feeding as well, food can have a huge impact on a dogs coat. you can also start to supplement fish or coconut oil in her diet to help with her coat.

for now maybe get her a jacket?

She's on Zignature. The vets don't know. We may have to do even more blood tests. I am assuming this has something to do either with her insulin or diabetes but I haven't been able to find anything even remotely close to what's going on with Izzie. She isn't losing fur and she isn't growing fur. It is the craziest thing!

That looks like a good food, have you changed up the proteins?

I started Sierra on this the first time she has a large section shaved, the vet offered it. i think it has helped her.

The weather may have a lot to do with it. We live in western ny and had, until 4 days ago, a wonderfully warm fall...way longer than usual. My 5 yr old boy has yet to put on any decent winter coat, my 7 yr old, who sleeps crated in a cold sunroom has a bit more coat but still not that thick. Both are still half-heartedly blowing a bit of coat. What is really surprising is my wooly boy, who usually lives to be outside in the winter, the colder the better, is not staying out nearly as much...but we went from mid 40''s to low 50's temps to, almost overnight, teens for highs during the day and single digit overnight lows.

That being said, my physician husband just walked by, said "whatcha doin" I told him and he said...maybe the vet should have her thyroid checked.
