| Last night I just found out I was approved, and will be adopting a dog. I plan to speak to my supervisor and ask if I can work at home for a bit during my dogs' transition to my home. My question is, is 2.5 weeks of working at home sufficient enough for his transition? I'm hoping to be approved for 1 week of working at home. As well as 1.5 weeks of working half at home and half at work. Then eventually leaving him at home for 8 hrs.
Additional information about the dog: - 1 years old, 6 months - house-broken - kennel trained - dog will be walked in morning - dog will be let out during my lunch break
Please let me know, how long it took your dog to acclimate to your home. I understand that ever dog is different, but I'd still like to hear your comments.
Thank you very much.

| Your time off from work sounds pretty good to me, for an adult dog!
They recommend a "two week shutdown" for rescue dogs, which you can google? I think it is a good idea to NOT show off the dog everywhere, don't invite all your family and friends over to pet the new dog, etc. Instead a quiet couple of weeks while he settles in...
( When I adopted, I had no idea about this. Everybody asking to come over and meet him, so we had dogpetting visitors 2-3 x a week. We had some incidents of growling. That's when I suddenly began joining dog forums! (In my defense - previous dog Great Dane totally loved all people and dogs...my german shepherd-husky mix is a lot more aloof and suspicious...I had no idea that a dog would need an adjustment period...)
For about 3 days, our rescue did not eat much. He laid in dark corners and stayed apart from us in the evenings. He seemed to be a bit sad, and missing his foster mom. After the first 3 days, he gradually got his appetite back. It took some weeks before he totally accepted us as his new family. These days, I am under constant surveillance...he is never more than one room away...

| When we got Ami, easy peasy. Loves everyone, happy as a clam. Z'ev? Ahh...Z'ev. He was not ready for prime time for...um. Welp. Quite a while. But - he does love people. Just needed to learn some manners. |

| As you said, every dog is different. Some who have been bounced around from home to shelter to home may take longer to become comfortable that this is my new and furever home - other will move in as if they've been there all their lives. You're honestly going to have to play that by ear. Some 'break in' time is great, especially if it's just you (and family) and the new dog. Getting overwhelmed can, as @Shepsky13 mentioned make him more nervous and a bit antsy. That you're taking time off to help him get settled is great - that your boss approves is excellent, I can't think of many who would agree. It'll give him time to adapt to the routine at your place and give you a chance to help him learn that 'outdoors is the place' I'd suggest that for the time you are home that you get him comfortable with his crate - put him up and go for a short walk outside or to the store, just a way to get him settled to being alone in the crate - and give you a chance to see how he's really going to handle it. Rehomed dogs often need a 'refresher course' in manners. Thanks for rescuing him and the best of luck to you!! _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Yes, and just wanted to add that I took Rumo out to potty every 2-3 hours at first, then extended to 4 hours, then 5+ hours. Just wanted to make sure he would not potty in our house! Although he was pottytrained at the foster's home, I did not know if he would automatically extend the understanding to our house... Good luck and congrats on new dog! (A husky, I suppose? Will you be sharing his pic? |

| Thanks for all the input so far! I appreciate it. I am adopting a husky. The only picture I have of him so far is the picture from the husky rescue. I won't be able to pick him up until 3/17. As of right now I'll post the picture of him on the rescue website. |

| It took about 2 weeks for our adult adoptee to adjust to his new life. The same can be said for pretty much every animal we've ever adopted I think, regardless of age, past or personality type. Some took months to really show their true colors but the adjustment period for all of ours has been about 2 weeks...give or take a few days. _________________ |

I hope so! I’m planning on running half a marathon this year. I’m excited to have a running partner. |
